Residency Training in Rural Psychology
The Residency training programme in Rural Psychology offered by the Department of Clinical Health Psychology is a one-year postdoctoral training experience in rural Manitoba.
The residency in rural psychology provides opportunities for a diversity of experience. The resident can structure time to suit training needs and interests. A wide variety of clients are served in terms of presenting problem, age, cultural and ethnic background. Residents conduct individual and family treatment and assessments and may also run treatment groups. In addition to treatment, the resident is often asked to provide consultation services to mental health workers, other health professionals, and schools. In keeping with community psychology principles, the resident may choose to focus some attention on public education or continuing education for health workers in the region, or work with other agencies and self-help groups in the region to plan and implement public education programs.
Individuals who have completed all doctoral degree requirements in Clinical Psychology, including an APA or CPA accredited pre-doctoral internship, may apply for this specialized training position. The deadline for receipt of applications for the 2011-2012 year is April 30, 2011.
The Resident spends the year in one of the following regions of rural or northern Manitoba:
- Interlake Region, north of Winnipeg between Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba.
- Burntwood Region, including the northern community of Thompson and the surrounding region.
- Parkland Region, including Dauphin and surrounding area.
- North Eastman, primarily agricultural region northeast of Winnipeg.
- South Eastman, including the community of St. Anne, Manitoba, and covering an area of over 8,000 square kilometers.
- NorMan Region, including the resource industry towns of The Pas and Flin Flon, and surrounding region.
The 2011-2012 Resident will be placed in the Interlake Region (Selkirk, Manitoba).
Supervision will be provided by a Registered Psychologist living and working in the region, who holds an academic appointment in the Department of Clinical Health Psychology, University of Manitoba. Additional supervision and consultation will be provided by other Psychologists based in Winnipeg, by means of periodic visits to the region and through distance supervision via telephone, FAX, and e-mail.
The Residency training programme typically begins in September, with a brief period of orientation in Winnipeg, followed by orientation to the region within which the Resident will live for the year.
The Resident will be registered as a postgraduate trainee in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba, with salary and benefits at the level of a second-year Medical Resident (PGY2). The stipend for the year is currently $57,488. Benefits include a dental plan. For Nor-Man, Burntwood or Parklands regions, the Resident will also receive a remoteness allowance and travel funds for two round trips by air to Winnipeg during the year.
It is our hope that a number of the Psychologists trained through this programme will choose to remain in rural or northern areas to practice, following their Residency training.
