The Department of Clinical Health Psychology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba offers a twelve-month Pre-doctoral Residency in Clinical Psychology. Our Residency Program is fully accredited through the Canadian Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association through August 2011.  We will be applying for reaccreditation through CPA (site visit to occur in the Spring of 2011), but have chosen not to renew APA accreditation at the conclusion of the 2010- 2011 training year, in light of APA's plan to discontinue accreditation outside of the U.S.

The Department of Clinical Health Psychology is both an academic department within the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Manitoba, and a clinical programme within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.

Our Residency Program endorses the Scientist-Practitioner model of training for professional psychologists. The goal of our residency is to train generalist clinical psychologists, with the skills to work with a variety of populations and the ability to apply research skills and knowledge to the analysis and solution of health problems.

Five different streams or areas of emphasis are available within our residency. Applicants may apply to one or more of these five streams:
  • Adult Stream (2 residents)
  • Child and Adolescent Stream (2 residents)
  • Adult Neuropsychology Stream (1 resident)
  • Rural Stream (1 resident)
  • Northern Stream—Flin Flon or Thompson (1 resident)
Each stream consists of two six-month Major Rotations. Residents also spend one half day per week in minor rotations. Minor rotations allow the resident to develop skills working with modalities of assessment and treatment, clinical settings, or patient populations that they may not have had prior experience with, in order to ensure that they receive broad training. Residents also treat at least one adult psychotherapy case or one child play therapy case for the duration of the year. Residents in the Rural and Northern streams undertake a variety of training experiences in Winnipeg during the first half of their year intended to round out their clinical skills in preparation for rural and/or northern practice during the second six months. All residents participate in seminars on professional and clinical issues, case presentations, teaching rounds and departmental colloquia. Thus, residents have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and develop competence in a variety of areas of clinical health psychology, regardless of which area of emphasis they have chosen.

The stipend for the resident is $51,285.00 for the year. Psychology residents are members of the Professional Association of Residents and Interns of Manitoba (P.A.R.I.M.), and have salary and benefit parity with first year medical residents in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba.

This Residency Programme participates in the APPIC Computer Matching Program.

Only Canadian citizens or landed immigrants are eligible to apply for positions as psychology interns. The University of Manitoba encourages applications from qualified women and men, including members of visible minorities, aboriginal people, and persons with disabilities. Applicants from CPA or APA accredited doctoral programmes in Clinical Psychology are preferred.

This residency abides by all guidelines of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centres (APPIC) regarding offers of internship positions and communication with applicants. A copy of the APPIC Guidelines is available from the APPIC web site: www.appic.org.

Our residency programme is a member of the Canadian Council of Professional Psychology Program (CCPPP).

The application deadline for the 2012-2013 training year is November 15, 2011. Interviews are offered January 9-13, 2012. Personal interviews provide the applicant with important information about our programme, its facilities, and the city of Winnipeg. Applicants who are offered an interview but cannot travel to Winnipeg will have telephone interviews arranged with clinical supervisors, current residents, and the Director of Training.
