Prospective Students
Prior to submitting your application to Graduate Studies, the following four criteria MUST be satisfied:
    1. It is the prospective student's responsibility to contact and secure a supervisor prior to applying to Biochemistry & Medical Genetics.  Please contact only the ones currently accepting graduate students on our faculty listing, and send the prospective supervisor your CV and transcripts.  Faculty will not respond if this information is not included.

    2. Submit a letter of permission to tuntun.sarkar@med.umanitoba.ca from the faculty member who is willing to supervise you . 
       
    3. After receiving a written confirmation from your prospective supervisor regarding acceptance, you are then REQUIRED to forward scanned copies of your transcripts to tuntun.sarkar@med.umanitoba.ca for eligibility

    4. Meet all admission requirements of our department as well as the Faculty of Graduate Studies. See Dept Supplementary Regulations:

The Biochemistry and Medical Genetics Graduate Student Admissions Committee will evaluate all applications received from the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Based on the recommendations of the Committee, the Chair of the Graduate Student Admissions Committee will advise the Head as to the acceptability of the applicant. Only the Chair of the Graduate Student Admissions Committee and the Head (or the Chair and Head's designate) has the authority to make recommendations for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Program Descriptions & Funding Opportunities

The Department offers Pre-Masters, M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs to students who have completed a four year degree course in biochemistry or equivalent. All students currently enrolled in the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs of the department  receive financial support either directly from granting agencies or through supervisors’ grants. Graduate students are eligible to apply for studentship awards from Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, National Cancer Institute of Canada, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Manitoba Health Research Council, University of Manitoba, and other granting agencies.

The department also offers postdoctoral training programs to qualified individuals. Competitive fellowships are available to holders of Ph.D. or M.D. degrees. The department also has a joint PhD/Residency program with the Department of Pathogy.  It also participates in an accredited Royal College Training Program in Medical Genetics as well as Canadian College of Medical Geneticists fellowship training.  Faculty members are committed to mentoring undergraduate, co-op and summer projects, introducing students to a wide range of basic, applied and clinical research activities.
