The UGME curriculum at the University of Manitoba is dynamic and innovative. It reflects current Canadian and American accreditation standards and is very responsive to the educational needs of our students. The first two years, the Pre-Clerkship, covers the basic sciences as well as an introduction to the Clinical Sciences, which is necessary for the last two years, the Clerkship. This time is spent working with patients under supervision.
We also have a number of innovative programs during the summer. Medical students who are interested in research can apply for the BSc(Med) program which allows students to pursue a degree based on two summers of research. The MD/PhD option allows selects students to pursue the MD and PhD degrees simultaneously. Our students who are interested in clinical experiences during the summer can apply for Rural and Northern clinical encounters and other types of Early Exposures.

Pre-Clerkship
The Pre-Clerkship, which is the first two years of the UGME curriculum, teaches basic concepts necessary to care for patients. The subject matter is divided into blocks which cover core concepts in health and medicine, human development and body systems. Clinical Skills, Problem Solving, Medical Humanities, Laboratory and Investigative Medicine, and Stress Management sessions also are integrated into the six blocks.
Clerkship
The Clerkship consists of the third and fourth years of medical school where students spend time caring for patients. The Introduction to Clerkship program helps students transition from the classroom to clinical sites before they start the Clinical Clerkship.
