The IMG Program of the University of Manitoba offers one training program.

Medical Licensure Program for International Medical Graduates (MLPIMG)

What is the MLPIMG?

  • It is a 1-year training program for family physicians
  • It is provided to enhance the current skills of IMG physicians
  • MLPIMG physicians will work in rural and underserviced areas of Manitoba for return of service
  • MLPIMG physicians will work to obtain medical licensure as family physician

What training is provided in the MLPIMG?

  • IMG training follows a PGY1 program with other residents
  • There are 13 four-week postgraduate medical education rotations (PGME) in:
    1. Emergency medicine – 2 rotations (4 weeks urban and 4 weeks rural)
    2. Family medicine (city and rural) – 3 rotations (12 weeks)
    3. Gynecology – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
    4. Obstetrics – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
    5. Internal medicine – 2 rotations (8 weeks)
    6. Pediatrics (outpatient) – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
    7. Pediatrics (ward) – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
    8. Psychiatry – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
    9. Vacation – 1 rotation (4 weeks)
  • IMG Physicians are evaluated after each rotation
    • Failure of any 1 rotation results in remediation
    • Failure of any 2 rotations will result in dismissal from the MLPIMG

If I apply, will I be admitted to the MLPIMG?

  • Your application does not guarantee admission
  • MLPIMG is a competitive program
  • It has a 20% acceptance rate, based on previous years (Program history and statistics)

How do I apply to the MLPIMG?

  • Check to see if you meet the requirements of the program (see Eligibility)
  • Downloadable instructions on how to apply to MLPIMG are available
  • The application and selection process is the same for all applicants—there are no exceptions
  • The application process involves 3 main steps:
    • Application
    • National Assessment Collaboration Objective Structured Clinical Examination (NAC OSCE)
    • Interview
  • Top ranked candidates at each step advance to the next step in a reverse pyramid manner
    • Proceeding to one step does not guarantee movement to the next step,
      i.e. A candidate may have submitted a NAC OSCE score but may not be selected for the interview
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure documents are submitted/verified
    • The program is not responsible for missing documents or incomplete packages

Details of each step of the application process

  1. Evidence of Preregistration – Physician Training.
    1. Must be received by Physician Credentials Registry of Canada (PCRC) for source verification by the MLPIMG application due date
    2. Must be approved by CPSM by October 1, 2012
    3. This process can take time – send your documentation early
    4. It is candidate’s responsibility to ensure these deadlines are met

  2. Application
    1. Fill in the MLPIMG Application (Application Packages and how to apply)
    2. Meet the deadlines - check important dates
    3. Have all the exams and tests that you have completed included with the application or sent separately, ensuring that they will arrive on time:
      1. English proficiency exam
      2. MCCEE and MCCQE1 (required) and MCCQE2(optional)
      3. Immigration status
      4. Reference letters
    4. Applicant requirements are outlined (Eligibility)
    5. Applications  and NAC OSCE results are reviewed and ranked
    6. Highest ranked applicants are invited for interview
    7. Not all applicants will be interviewed
  3. NAC OSCE
    1. national, standardized examination
    2. tests knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential for postgraduate training in Canada
    3. has 12 OSCE stations and 4 written therapeutics stations
    4. must have a pass standing on the MCCEE to be eligible to take the NAC OSCE
    5. can take NAC OSCE at any of the multiple site available in 2011/2012
    6. there will be at least one sitting in Winnipeg between March and April 2012

  4. Interview
    1. Personal interview 
    2. Not a knowledge interview
    3. Single interview -- lasts 30 minutes
    4. Two or more interviewers independently rate candidates’ answers
    5. Structured questions are the same for all applicants
      1. Applicants are responsible for their transportation to the interviews 
    6. Acceptance into the MLPIMG
      1. Stages of the application process are weighted as follows:
        1. Application details (10%)
        2. NAC OSCE (50%)
        3. Interview (40%)
      2. Committee reviews and tallies scores for individuals
      3. Highest ranking applicants will be offered positions in MLPIMG

    Getting ready for the MLPIMG training

    1. You will be interacting with multiple departments and agencies (Important Organizations)
    2. Obtain educational registration with CPSM

    3. Obtain written offer of employment that will include
      1. Funding for the training (52 weeks) and orientation period (4 weeks) by RHA/employer
      2. Return of service agreement
    4. Employment
      1. Employers are Regional health Authorities (RHA), private clinics, or hospitals
      2. Employment will be rural
      3. Physician Resource Coordination Office (PRCO) will facilitate job offer and agreements

    5. Training
      1. Conducted through:

    6. Orientation
      1. Manditory
      2. 4-week structured orientation for all IMG’s (Orientation)
      3. Conducted in Winnipeg
      4. Prepares candidates for the Canadian Health Care System
      5. Salary during this period is provided by the Sponsor and is based on attendance

    Post-training
    Successful candidates will:

    • Work for their sponsor (employer) for return of service
    • Be eligible to apply for conditional registration with CPSM
    • Mentorship - International Medical Graduate Mentorship and Clinical Enhancement (IMGMCE)
      1. Physicians are assigned a mentor for a 1 year term
      2. Must complete reports
    • Assigned a practice advisor for the duration of their conditional licensure 
    • Undergo mandatory audits
    • Have 5 years to obtain Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) http://www.mcc.ca/
