Faculty development

Our workshops and consultation services provide practical skills, evidence-based knowledge and collegial opportunities to share best practices in teaching and scholarship. We also create customized workshops and resources for individuals, programs and departments. Whether you’re a new faculty member or are a well-established academic, we’re here to support your ongoing academic development.

Our faculty development courses cover a wide range of topics to support your teaching and career goals, but you may have needs that fall outside our current offerings. Individual consultations offer you support in a one-on-one setting tailored to your unique needs.

Curriculum development

Developing or redesigning a course can be daunting. Let us help! We can assist you at any stage, from developing course objectives to evaluating and revising your course once it’s been delivered. Contact our educational specialists to learn more about ways we can support you.

Research and evaluation support

We provide consultation and support for educational research and evaluation projects in the faculty. We can consult or take an active part in designing and conducting educational research studies using a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. We can also support evaluation of programs, educational activities, and other projects.

Technology and online learning

Exploring educational technologies can be a valuable part of teaching and curriculum development.

Through our technology hatchery, you’ll be introduced to new platforms that can help enhance your students’ learning experience. We’ll even support you as you familiarize yourself and then incorporate the new technology into your teaching!

We will work with you to find solutions that meet your specific needs. Services we regularly provide include:

  • Assisting in determining what technologies best meet your needs
  • Helping you plan your course design
  • Creating interactive resources
  • Supporting virtual events

Tuning into a podcast is a great way to stay current on topics that interest you, when and where it suits you best. ISME offers a variety of different podcasts, available free of charge on Soundcloud.

3 Quick Questions

Medical education is rich and diverse, comprised of a variety of settings and ways for learning. Finding information regarding a topic can be challenging when faced with so many available options to explore. 3 Quick Questions aims to provide you with key insights from experienced practitioners in a relatively short period of time by having them answer – you guessed it – 3 quick questions. Please explore our growing list of topics and listen to a podcast (or several). Hopefully these will inspire more questions and enrich your learning.

Teaching small groups and tutorials

Small group sessions and tutorials in the UGME curriculum are important opportunities for students to discuss, apply, and consolidate their learning.

Topics include aspects of small group instruction that students highly value, such as effective time management, and facilitating student participation throughout the session. Other themes identified components of small group teaching that can be problematic, such as deviating too far off topic.
