What are the elibility requirements to apply?
- Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada at the time of application.
- Must be eligible to receive you Bachelor's degree by June 29, 2012 from a university recognized by the University of Manitoba.
- Must have completed a minimum of 6 credit hours in Biochemistry at the university level with minimum grade of C. Courses must be complete and a grade assigned no later than June 29, 2012. If you completed Biochemistry courses at a post-secondary institute other than the University of Manitoba, please ensure they are equivalent by reviewing the Acceptable Biochemistry Course Combinations. All other course combinations will not be accepted.
- Applicants with a BSc (general) or BA (general) must complete 18 credit hours in humanities/social sciences. Applicants who complete a 4 year Major or Honours program may waive up to 12 credit hours of this pre-requisite. Courses must be complete and a grade assigned no later than June 29, 2012. - Minimum score of 7 on each of the sub-test sections of the MCAT, in a single session. For admission in August 2012, applicants must have written the MCAT between April 2008 and September 10, 2011. The MCAT exam cannot be waived.
- Minimum Adjusted Grade Point Average (AGPA) of 3.30 at the time of application.
2. Can the MCAT be waived?
- The MCAT is a measure of the ability to understand basic concepts and to solve problems in the areas of physics and physics-related chemistry (PS) and biology and biologically related chemistry (BS). It is also a measure of the ability to understand, evaluate and apply information and arguments presented in prose texts (VR) and a measure of the skill of developing a central idea and presenting these in an essay (WS).
- The MCAT is a required examination and will not be waived.
3. How many applicant pools are there and what is the criteria for applying to each pool?
- Manitoba pool -- Must have graduated from a Manitoba High School or lived continuously in the Province of Manitoba for 2 years at the time of application. Applicants who have provided a minimum of two years of full-time service in the Canadian Forces at the time of application are included n the Manitoba applicant pool regardless of their residency at the time of application.
- Out-of-Province pool -- A limited number of places are available to residents who are not Manitoban. Each year approximately 10% of the class is selected from this pool.
- Aboriginal pool -- Applicants from all provinces and territories in Canada are encouraged to declare their First Nations, Metis or Inuit heritage. Applicants will be required to submit documentation to support this declaration.
- Bilingual pool -- To be considered eligible for the Bilingual (French and English) pool: applicants must meet all of the current eligibility requirements; applicants must meet the current criteria for the Manitoba applicant pool; and applicants will be required to submit evidence of language level competency in French being one or more of the following: -- 1. secondary education completed in the French language; 2. post-secondary education having been completed in the French language 3. or evidence of language proficiency in French as evaluated by the Test pour etudiants et stagiaires au Canada (TEStCan) with a minimum score of 5 in each of oral comprehension, written comprehension and written expression; and evidence of a minimum score of 4.5 on oral expression.
- MD/PhD Program pool -- To be considered eligible for the MD/PhD Program pool: 1. applicants must meet all of the current eligibility requirements for the MD Program and must apply to the MD Program; 2. applicants must meet the eligibility requirements established by the Faculty of Graduate Studies for the PhD Program and must apply to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Please refer to the Applicant Information Bulletin regarding the supplemental documentation that may be required.
4. Is it possible to be considered in more than one applicant pool?
- All candidates who apply will be placed in the appropriate applicant pool.
5. Is there special consideration for occupational experience?
- Applicants with occupationally related health care experience must meet the same entrance criteria as all other applicants.
6. Is there a full-time study requirement?
- No. University of Manitoba accepts all undergraduate grades; whether completed part-time or full-time.
7. Do you accept spring and/or summer courses?
- Yes. All undergraduate grades are accepted and used to calculate your AGPA.
- Please keep in mind that all courses must be complete by May and a grade assigned to your course no later than June 29 of the year you are being considered for admission.
8. Is there preference to applicants with a specific undergraduate degree?
- No, we do not give preference to any particular undergraduate degree.
9. How is it determined that the specific Biochemistry courses I have completed will be accepted?
- The acceptable course combinations at the University of Manitoba are Biochemistry 2360 and 2370.
- Courses at other universities have been analyzed to determine equivalency.
- These can be found by reviewing the Acceptable Biochemistry Course Combinations.
- No other course combinations will be accepted.
- Courses must be complete and a grade assigned no later than June 29, 2012 in order to meet the eligibility requirement.
10. What courses satisfy the Humanities/Social Sciences pre-requisite?
- Applicants with a BSc (general) or BA (general) must complete 18 credit hours in humanities/social sciences. Applicants who complete a 4 year Major or Honours program may waive up to 12 credit hours of this pre-requisite.

11. Do all of the pre-requisites have to be completed by the time of application in October?
- NO.
- You must complete the course requirements and a grade must be assigned by June 29, 2012 in order to meet the eligibility requirement.
- Degree requirements must be met by June 29, 2012.
- For example, if you are applying for admission in August 2012, you must complete all course pre-requisites by June 29, 2012 and your degree must be conferred by June 29, 2012 or you will not be eligible for admission.
12. What is the minimum acceptable grade for AP and IB courses?
- Applicants must receive a minimum grade of 4 in AP and a minimum grade of 5 in IB exams.
- Students who have NOT previously received AP or IB transfer credit from the University of Manitoba but whish to have their AP or IB work considered for the AGPA calculation should indicate in writing and submit an official AP or IB transcript to Enrolment Services, 424 University Centre, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2.
13. If all of the minimum requirements are met, does this mean I will get into medical school?
- No, admission into the medical school program is a highly competitive process.
- In the 2010-2011 applicant cycle, there were 844 applicants for 110 seats.
