
The Certificate in Logistics is offered in coordination with the Red River College (RRC) program Transportation and Distribution Management. To qualify for the Certificate, students will be required to complete eight of the thirteen courses offered in the program. Students will be able to select from nine courses offered through UMTI and four courses offered by RRC.
Six courses offered by UMTI match the curriculum of the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT). Students who receive the Certificate in Logistics would be able to complete their CITT designation with preliminary courses offered at RRC or many other post-secondary institutions.
Most people working in the transportation industry have learned their "trade" on-the-job. The new reality is that industry can no longer afford to educate its staff this way, but the need for continuous learning has increased. Globalization and technological change have made logistics management the new competitive edge. To advance a career in this field now requires a new level of professionalism and formal education.
This program will be helpful to persons who wish to enhance their career in the transportation and logistics industry.
Our graduates will have the opportunity to work in the transportation industry in shipping, receiving, inventory, distribution, management and marketing positions in sectors such as:
Carriers
- Airlines, railways, trucking, airports, pipelines, marine, etc.
Third Party Logistics Providers
- Freightforwarders, customs brokers, public warehousing, etc.
Manufacturing
- Metal industry, woodworking, machinery, packaging, etc.
Agribusiness
- Grain handling, food processing, feed industry, etc.
Government
- Federal, provincial, municipal
New applicants to the program are required to complete an "Application to the Program" and pay the one time only entrance fee of $50 (in addition to the course fee).
A basic prerequisite for admission to the Certificate in Logistics Program will be a high school Manitoba Grade 12 standing. Applicants possessing higher levels of educational qualification and at least 5 years of work experience in the transport/logistics industry will be given preference.
Evening courses will be held at the University of Manitoba Transport Institute in the Drake Management Centre. Courses are offered twice a year, in January and September. Classes are held once a week for 13 weeks from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., unless otherwise noted. Course fees are $595 per course.
