Management Information Systems Major
Management information systems (MIS) focuses on the management of information technology and information systems to support business operations and strategies. As computer technology has become an integral part of our lives, it has also become an integral part of organizations. Organizations use computers to achieve their goals; they need in-house personnel or consultants from other organizations to help translate the technical aspects of computers into accomplishing their business goals. That is where the MIS major comes in.

If you like working with computers AND you like working with people, then MIS is the place for you. You will learn how to determine what the information needs of a company are and how to design information systems that get real business done; you will study various kinds of software, and you will learn how to manage an IT project and how to use information systems for a strategic advantage. The job market for MIS majors is growing, and there is an ongoing shortage of MIS professionals in Canada and in Manitoba. Our MIS majors will always be in demand. For example, our graduates are working at Great West Life, IBM, Investors Group, Wawanesa, Standard Aero, CN, the University of Manitoba and many other organizations as system analysts, IT specialists, and consultants. If you have already chosen a major, you can always take MIS as your second major. Our MIS double majors are working using their MIS expertise to support their careers at Deloitte, Maple Leaf Foods, Pepsico, and many other Canadian organizations.

Typical Careers: business analyst, system analyst, network manager, database administrator, data analyst, Web site manager, Web developer, IT manager, and a host of other jobs that emerge with the development of new information technologies.
