Academic Requirements

Minimum Credit Hours

  • All Asper Exchange students are required to take a minimum of 12 credit hours (or equivalent to 156 contact hours) per term while on exchange; note that the University of Leeds requires completion of the equivalent of 15 credit hours
  • Failure to take the minimum number of credit hours will result in the return of all scholarship money received from the exchange program
  • Courses taken above and beyond the 12 credit hours of courses will be required to pay additional fees upon return from the exchange

Core Courses

Asper Exchange students are generally encouraged to take courses on exchange that will fulfill Electives or Business Options in the degree program. Exchange courses may also be transferred towards the following core course requirements:

1.  International Business

Students admitted in September 2011 or later are required to complete 3 credit hours from the International Business Requirement under the new program requirementsStudents on exchange may transfer courses with an international content/focus to fulfill this requirement.

2.  Alternative Business Management

Students admitted in September 2011 or later are required to complete 3 credit hours from the Alternative Business Management Requirement under the new program requirements. Courses taken during exchange that meet some of the following criteria may fulfill this requirement:

  • Foster critical thinking about broader debates, challenges, and developments in the environment of management
  • Focus on economic, social, political or environmental issues as they apply to management
  • Focus primarily on management outside of the conventional, for-profit sector
  • Explore alternative approaches for thinking about or practicing management in the 21st century

All courses taken abroad and their degree allocations must be approved by the Exchange Coordinator. 

Recommended Exchange Courses

  • Courses at our partner schools cannot be guaranteed to meet program requirements. Please contact the Exchange Coordinator for details.
  • Students should ideally leave Business Options and Electives available to complete for their exchange
  • All courses (including failures) are transferred into the B. Comm (Hons.) Degree Program

Transfer Credits

Transfer credit will be completed by the International Exchange Coordinator at the Asper School.

  • Students should research and ask questions prior to their departure regarding international grade conversions
  • Refer to the International Grading Scale Equivalency page for information on grading scales for each country
  • Students are required to attend an individual Pre-Departure Meeting to discuss course selections and to sign a Study Contract
  • All questions should be directed to the Exchange Coordinator

Do I have to major in International Business to participate in Asper Exchange?

No. Students with any major are eligible for the exchange program. However, students will find it easier to find courses for an International Business major. It is also recommended to leave Business Option and Elective courses available to complete for your exchange term(s).

Students participating in the Asper International Exchange program must take courses in the following areas to complete an International Business major:

  1. 3 credit hours or equivalent - International (Global) Management OR Business
  2. 3 credit hours or equivalent - International Finance or Marketing
  3. 3 credit hours or equivalent - any topic course with an international theme or a language course
  4. 3 credit hours or equivalent - any topic course with an international theme or a language course

All Asper exchange students must discuss details of their course selection with the Exchange Coordinator before participating in the exchange program. International Business majors may:

  1. Complete a portion of the International Business major course requirements at Asper and wish to take the balance of courses through the exchange
  2. Take a portion of the International Business major course requirements during the exchange and complete the balance of courses upon return to the U of M.
  3. Complete the International Business major courses during the exchange

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

All students on exchange must remain in communication with the Exchange Coordinator at the Asper School of Business, and complete the following requirements by the specified deadline dates:

Failure to meet these academic requirements may result in a loss of transfer credit and could affect the completion of your academic program.

BCOMM (HONS) PROGRAM
