BComm Dinner 2019: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How will this dinner benefit me?

A: The BComm dinner is a great way to kick-start your BComm journey and meet Asper faculty and your fellow classmates before school begins.

  • You will formally receive your exclusive and traditional Asper Pin commemorating your official membership to the Asper community.
  • It's a great opportunity to form valuable business connections with Winnipeg and Manitoba business leaders who often provide professional insights, and sometimes even career opportunities.
  • It's a rehearsal opportunity to fine-tune your soft skills (eg. networking, effective communication, posture, tone, listening), skills that are often not taught in the classroom. This is in anticipation of the countless networking opportunities to come.
  • An opportunity to build your self-confidence and networking skills as you begin to form valuable business connections.

Q: What does business attire mean?

A: Business attire looks classy and professional. Suits are suitable for both men and women. For a more casual business-appropriate look, wear dress pants, wear a dress shirt tucked in and buttoned.

For men...

  • Make sure the shirt is long-sleeved.
  • Always wear a belt.
  • Your belt should match your shoes.
  • Tie is preferred.

For women...

  • Skirts are appropriate as long as they are no shorter than two inches above the knee.
  • If you are wearing a skirt, make sure to wear pantyhose or stockings.
  • Sweaters, blouses and vests are also fine, but should not be revealing (make sure the neckline and waistline are conservative). Be careful to pair them with the right bottoms (black pants or a skirt usually work well).
  • Dresses for women are usually not appropriate for a business look, unless they are worn with a matching jacket and are conservative-looking.

For footwear, men should wear clean, polished shoes, and women should wear shoes with a low heel. For a business-casual look, women may wear flats. Sandals are never appropriate.

Q: What is considered essential business and table etiquette?

A: Don't stress if you are not familiar with the appropriate etiquette for events like this. You'll have plenty of opportunities to perfect your business etiquette during your time here at the Asper School of Business. In the meanwhile, here are a few tips:

  • Present yourself professionally.
  • Don't chew gum.
  • Use your full name.
  • Make eye contact.
  • Always shake hands with your right hand when meeting someone.
  • Pay attention to how others want to be introduced.
  • Always stand when you are being introduced to someone.
  • Try to avoid pointing as it implies aggressive behaviour.
  • Do not start eating until everyone at your table has been served their food.
  • Prepare a polite exit.
  • When in doubt, remember "BMW" Bread plate, Meal plate, Water glass (in order from left to right of your plates and cups).

Q: Can I bring a guest?

A: No. This is an exclusive event strictly for new students entering the Asper School of Business.

Q: What if I have mobility and/or dietary restrictions?

A: Please indicate any mobility or dietary restrictions on the event registration page at UMConnect.

Q: I already have business cards. Should I bring them?

A: Yes! You may make some new business connections.

Q: How long will the dinner be?

A: The speaking program begins at 5:30pm. Dinner will be served just before 6pm. The entire event should finish by 7:30pm at the latest.

Q: What do I do when I arrive?

A: When you arrive at the Fairmont Winnipeg Hotel (prior to 5:15pm), stop at the registration table on the main floor to find out where to sit, then make your way to the banquet hall on the second floor. An escalator near the entrance will take you directly to the hall. A group of Asper students will greet and direct you when you arrive.

Q: What if I have questions?

A: Email us at asper_info@umanitoba.ca.

Q: What happened last year?

A: Last year the event was a BComm Luncheon generously supported by the Associates of the Asper School of Business. The Associates actively participate in the Asper School of Business supporting programs such as the mentoring, coaching, lecturing programs, as well, connecting you with employers to help you further your career opportunities prior to graduation.

  • Students met local business leaders, their fellow students and professors, and inspiring guest speakers.
  • Students were introduced to the Associates professional network.
  • Students formally receive their exclusive and traditional Asper Pin commemorating official membership to the Asper community.
  • Students quickly developed business and dinner table etiquette.
