GENERAL QUESTIONS

Q. How do I register for courses?
A.
There are three tutorials available in the Registration Information section of this website. These tutorials are aimed primarily at Direct Entry High School students in terms of the courses to take, however the information on how to use Aurora Student would apply to everyone.

Q. I have an error when registering in Aurora, what do I do?
A.
There is a list of the most common errors in the Registration Information section (on the left) of this website.

Q. What is a prerequisite (prereq)?
A. Prerequisites are specific course that you are required to take before you register in a course.  Some courses will require high school prerequisites but others will require university level prerequisites. The prerequisite requirements of each course are listed online in Aurora Student in the Course Catalog (which can be linked to through the Class Schedule by clicking View Catalog Entry).

Q. What courses do I take to fulfil my degree requirements?
A.
There are now two different programs that students must follow. There is one for Students Admitted Prior to September 2011 and one for Students Admitted September 2011 and Thereafter, you must follow the program requirements you were admitted under.  Complete information about both programs is available through the Degree Requirements section of this website.

Q. How do I know if I registered in the correct courses for my degree requirements?
A. Please stop by the Asper Undergraduate Program Office (268 Drake Centre) or contact a student advisor to get your program requirements checked. You can also refer our program guide for the degree information.

Q. Can I use the courses I took at my last school/university towards my Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Manitoba?
A.
Transfer credit is evaluated centrally by the University of Manitoba Admissions Office on a course by course basis more detailed information is available on their website. Once your courses have been evaluated by the Admissions Office and are visible on your UofM record an Advisor in the Asper School of Business will determine whether the courses can be used towards the Bachelor of Commerce degree. Please note that your courses at your current/previous post secondary institution will be evaluated at the time of admission and your transfer credits will be finalized after you have been officially accepted to the University of Manitoba.

If you would like to have an idea of what courses might transfer you can use the online Transfer Credit Equivalencies database to see course that have current evaluations on file. Courses on this database are subject to change.

Q. Can the courses that I took at another school fulfil the written English requirement here?
A.
Courses transferred from external institutions do not satisfy the written English requirement, except courses that transfer as Department of English courses, subject ENGL. Some exceptions may apply but would need to be assessed on an individual basis.

Q. What courses should I take for my electives?
A. Electives are courses you are required to take that are taught outside of the Asper School of Business. For information on how to choose your electives please see our Electives page.

Q. I was admitted in September 2011 so I have to take 6 hours from ANTH, HIST, MATH, PHIL, POLS, PSYC OR SOC does it have to be from just one of these subjects and how do I choose?
A. You do have to take a total of 6 credit hours but it is okay if you take 3 from one area and 3 from another. When you make your choice of what to take you should keep in mind the courses you would like to take later, just like when you pick your electives. The courses you take here could be used as prerequisites for later courses or, if you are interested in Actuarial Studies, help put you on track to your professional designation. (See: What courses should I take for my electives? for more specific information.).

Q. I was admitted prior to September 2011 has my program changed?
A. Your program basically has not changed; you will be required to complete the program you were admitted under. However some of the specific courses that you were required to take will now have lab sections that you must take and some specific courses will no longer be offered, they will be replaced by new courses. If you have taken the former courses you will still be able to use them to complete your degree, but if you had not yet taken one of the courses that has changed you will now be required to take the new course.

Required Courses that now have Labs:

ACC 1100 , ACC 1110 , MIS 2000 , FIN 2200

Required New Courses:

SCM 2160 Supply Chain and Operations Management (former OPM 2600 Production/Operations Mgmt)
GMGT 2010 Business Communications (former GMGT 2000 Into to Communications)
GMGT 2060 Management and Organizational Theory (former GMGT 2080 Intro to Mgmt & Org Theory)

Q. How does the U of M determine a full-time or part-time student status?
A.
Student status is determined by the number of credit hours in each term (Fall and Winter). In the Asper School of Business, a student who is registered in a 60% course load which is a minimum of 9 credit hours in each term is considered to be a full time student. Therefore, a student with less than 9 credit hours is considered to be a part time student. Please note that the definition of full-time and part-time status may vary depending on offices / institutions. To be eligible for most scholarships students will need to have an 80% course load of 12 credit hours in Fall and 12 credit hours in Winter.

Q. How do I declare my graduation?
A. You should declare your graduation date in Aurora Student. The deadline to declare your graduation date in Aurora will be the end of the revision period for your last term.  If you plan to graduate and have missed the deadline to declare online or if you need help declaring your grad date, please come to the Asper Undergraduate Program Office, 268 Drake Centre, for assistance.
Students are encouraged to declare a grad date as early as possible, and to come to the Undergraduate Program Office, 268 Drake Centre, to have a Program Advisor review your graduation requirements.

Q. How can I check to make sure I am eligible for graduation?
A. If you have concerns about your courses please stop by the Asper Undergraduate Program Office (room 268 Drake Centre) or contact a student advisor to get your graduation requirements checked.

Q. How can I declare my 2nd major?

ADMISSIONS: DIRECT ENTRY FROM HIGH SCHOOL QUESTIONS

Q: Can students drop out of their first year of University and apply for Direct Entry?
A:
Students applying for Direct Entry must be admitted directly from High School. Meaning that a student who has been accepted and attended University Classes (even if eventually VWing (Voluntarily Withdrawing)) is considered having post secondary education regardless of whether or not grades were received, and therefore is not eligible to apply for Direct Entry.

Q: What High School marks are used for advance early Direct Entry applicants?
A:
Advanced early admission uses grade 11 marks.

Advanced early applicants need an average of 85% over grade 11 (30S in Manitoba) English, Pre-Calculus or Applied Math 30S, plus one other 30S subject, with a minimum of 60% in each course. Students must submit an official high school mark statement of all subjects and marks for Grade 11 in *early-December.

Advanced Early Admission is conditional upon* receipt of a final high school record (Grade 12) showing that final Grade 12 results meet all the entrance requirements for the Asper School of Business.

* Check Admissions Office website for specific dates.

Q: What High School marks are used for early Direct Entry applicants?
A:
Early admission uses grade 12 midterm marks.

Early applications using grade 12 marks would need an average of 85% over midterm grades (or final grades if available for some subjects - depending on the semester system of the individual schools, some final grades will be available for the required subjects after 1st semester) in English 40S, Pre-Calculus or Applied Math 40S, plus one other 40S, with a minimum of 60% in each course.

Early Admission is conditional upon receipt* of your final high school record (Grade 12) showing that final Grade 12 results meet all the entrance requirements for the Asper School of Business.

* Check Admissions Office website for specific dates.

Q: What High School marks are used for final Direct Entry applicants?
A:
Final admission uses final grade 12 marks. Your High School (Grade 12) transcript record must show you fully meet all the entrance requirements for the Asper School of Business.

Q:  When will students be notified of their acceptance?
A:
Advanced early: students should receive their conditional acceptance by mid-January.
Early admission: students should receive their conditional acceptance by mid-May.
Final admission: students should receive their acceptance at the beginning of July.

Q: Will students who are unsuccessful in being admitted to Asper be automatically considered for U1? Or will they have to apply to U1?
A:
Direct Entry applicants who are unsuccessful in being admitted to Asper will automatically be considered for U1. They do not need to apply to U1 and do not need to pay another application fee.

Q:  For advanced early and early admission students when will the deadline be to (re)submit final high school transcripts?
A:
Advanced Early deadline date for grade 11 transcripts is *early-December – Students need to submit their own grade 11 transcripts.  Students who are currently attending grade 12 in Manitoba and NW Ontario do not need to submit their own grade 12 transcripts. We will contact the schools ourselves to obtain both midterm and final grade 12 transcripts - we do this at the end of March and at the end of June, so the students themselves do not have a deadline to submit their grade 12 marks.  Deadlines for students who have to submit their own marks (out of province) will be *mid-April for early and *early-July for final admission.

*Check Admissions Office website for specific dates.

Q:  If students who apply under advanced early or early admission are eventually unsuccessful when will then receive their "rejection" letter?
A:
Students who apply early and end up being unsuccessful when final grade 12 grades arrive would be notified within the first 2 weeks of July (once final grades arrive).  They would be advised that they have been moved to U1 (if eligible).
