Ph.D. Student and Alumni Profiles and Testimonials

"An exciting part of the doctoral program at Asper is that it offers a number of  opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds.  Having spent a long time in the corporate world, I was very apprehensive about my performance when I first joined the program. The opportunities and the encouragement given by the faculty during my stay here have boosted my confidence and performance immensely.  The best part of the program is that one gets to work on research projects with faculty from diverse areas, which I find very unique and rewarding." - (Murli) Etayankara Muralidharan, PhD Student in Business Administration

OUR ALUMNI

Our PhD program alumni are teaching, conducting research, and consulting in their chosen fields around the world - in Canada, the United States and throughout Asia. All have found great satisfaction in their careers and they credit the Asper School, at least in part, for their great successes! Our alumni valued their time here greatly, for many reasons. Here are some thoughts from some of our most recent alumni.

Dr. David Zhang (Asper PhD 2008) - click here for Dr. Zhang's website

David Zhang is Associate Professor of Management and Marketing at the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba. David’s research projects focus on entrepreneurial marketing strategies in the context of social entrepreneurship and family business. David’s research aims to develop conceptual models that elucidate the relationships among relevant organizational and environmental factors. One of his current projects investigates the uniqueness of social entrepreneurship in terms of organizational characteristics, resource acquisition, and managerial strategies. Another project investigates how family-run businesses develop unique corporate brand personality and provide value-added services to compete with the big chains.

David comments, "Reflecting on my experience as a PhD student at U of M, what I miss the most is the people there – from the rigorous professors to friendly staff, and empathetic cohort of grad student comrades. I have only begun to appreciate the professors’ expectations in conceptual and methodological rigor. I think I have also benefitted from joining my advisor’s research team early on in my PhD career. Learning by doing, that is my motto now."

Dr. Zhou Zhang (Asper PhD 2007) - click here for Dr. Zhang's website

Dr. Zhou Zhang received his Ph.D. in Finance from the I.H. Asper School of Business in 2007. Dr. Zhang’s research area is in corporate finance and international finance. He has published papers in the Journal of Corporate Finance and The
Financial Review.

Zhou comments. "Attending the Asper Ph.D. program is not the destination of your life-time learning curve, but a new starting point. You will be rigorously trained by world-class researchers and mentors and will learn how to conduct high-quality research using unique theoretical angles and advanced empirical methods. The great learning environment in this Ph.D. program will equip you to launch your academic career."
