Ph.D. Admission Requirements

The Ph.D. program is very selective; only highly qualified applicants are admitted. Before you apply to the program, do connect with a faculty member whose research interests match yours. It is a key asset in the application process to have a faculty champion for your application - having a faculty member who is already interested in you will help your application when it is presented to the admission committee. The program design assumes that students have completed an MBA degree or its equivalent. The MBA degree provides the breadth of knowledge or the "core" that is prerequisite to proceeding to Ph.D. studies in Management. Students without an MBA may be required to take additional master's level courses or to demonstrate equivalent knowledge in the core. It is preferable (but not mandatory) that students taking an MBA in anticipation of the Ph.D. elect the thesis option where possible.

The Selection Committee may accept exceptional students with only an undergraduate degree who have an outstanding scholastic record. These students are required to take a selection of MBA courses to make up any deficiency as determined by their advisory committee.

All applicants must submit the following documents:

Results of a graduate aptitude test, preferably the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), with a minimum score of 600. The GRE will be accepted with a mean percentile score across the three areas similar to the current acceptable percentile level of the GMAT.  GMAT and GRE scores older than 5 years are not acceptable.

Official transcripts of academic records, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on 4.5 scale) in the last 60 credit hours of study.  For information on the documents acceptable for assessment, please click here!

Results of an English language proficiency test for students who do not hold a secondary school diploma/university degree from Canada, or from one of the countries on the English Language Proficiency Exemption list. Scores more than 2 years old are not acceptable.  For tests and minimum scores accepted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, please click here!

Three letters of recommendation from persons who are knowledgeable about the applicant's academic ability.

A statement of goals and interests.

Application Deadline: January 10th each year - late applications will not be considered for awards/funding

Applicants with International documents/transcripts that are from universities outside of Canada and the USA are STRONGLY encouraged to apply at least 1-2 months in advance of the January 10th deadline.

**All required application documents must be received by the application deadline.  Incomplete applications will not be considered until all the required documents have been received.  A complete application includes all items listed on the checklist in the Application Forms section of this website.**

PLEASE NOTE:  Applications may be submitted after the deadline.  Applications that are submitted, or completed after the deadline are considered late applications.  Every effort will be made to consider applicants for the session of their choice, however space is limited and admission is competitive.  If we are unable to consider an applicant for the session of their choice, their application will be considered for the next available session.
