Alumni Homecoming 2017

Homecoming Invitation (PDF)

Saturday, September 16, 2017

Due to the rain forecast we are moving the BBQ indoors to the Drake Centre Commemorative Room (Fishbowl) at 11 AM.

Homecoming 2017 celebrates 80 years of business education and the more than 18,000 alumni who have been a part of the Faculty’s success.

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Drake Centre, home of the Asper School of Business, and gives us an opportunit to reflect on the students, alumni, staff, faculty and external stakeholders who created the culture of support for students we enjoy today.

Join the Race for Space

We want to honor the spirit of the Drake Centre building this year by returning to its foundation: our students. Your participation in the 2017 Race for Space at this year's Homecoming supports the Asper Student Legacy Fund, dedicated to improving the student experience by enhancing Drake Centre amenities and facilities.

We hope you and a guest will join us for the BBQ immediately following the race to celebrate this milestone. You do not have to participate in the race to join us for the BBQ.

Due to the rain forecast we are moving the BBQ indoors to the Drake Centre Commemorative Room (Fishbowl) at 11 AM.

You can also join the wider University of Manitoba community at the Bison Game at 1pm.

About the Race for Space

The 1980s were a time of change and innovation at what is known today as the I.H. Asper School of Business. Known then as the Faculty of Administrative Studies, it became in that decade the Faculty of Management. The students, cramped into what was called the “Commerce Annex”, convinced Dean Roland Grandpré to pursue an ambitious vision for a new home for the faculty.

Out of this conversation, a student-led initiative was born: a Race for Space to raise awareness for the need of a new building. A 10K run, the Race took place each year from 1982 to 1984 and involved high-profile business leaders and politicians in addition to faculty and students. After three years, the Race raised $50,000 – an amount considerably shy of the $14 to $16 million required. However, the students’ enthusiasm had inspired others beyond the university community.

The 80s also saw the formation the Associates in 1982. The Associates were, and remain, an active presence in the School: mentoring, coaching, lecturing, providing support, and connecting students with employers. The Associates were essential in raising the remaining funds needed to build Drake Centre. The building was completed in 1987, fully paid for before occupancy. Over the years the building has seen both major renovations such as the newly designed Albert D. Cohen Management Library as well as continued maintenance and upgrades.
