Supply Chain Management

On July 1, 2004, the Asper School of Business launched its new Department of Supply Chain Management (SCM), bringing together nine academic staff members from logistics, management science, operations manage-ment, and transportation.  This followed the awarding of five new academic positions in SCM by the Manitoba Council on Post Secondary Education (COPSE) in 2003.  The Transport Institute is a unit of the SCM Department.

Undergraduate Program in SCM

Our Department offers the following two courses in the Asper School B.Comm core curriculum:

• Introduction to Management Sciences ( MSCI 2150 )
  
• Fundamentals of Production and Operations Management ( OPM 2600 )

We also offer two undergraduate majors, one in Logistics/SCM and the other in Operations Management/Management Science.

The Transport Institute

 
Starting as a Centre for Transportation Studies in 1966, the Transport Institute has four decades of experience in transportation-related activities at the University of Manitoba.  The Institute is involved in three primary activities: research, outreach, and education.  Our research focuses on contemporary issues in transportation, logistics, and supply chain management.  For instance, we recently completed a study of Manitoba’s food supply chain under various scenarios of pandemic influenza.  This study was funded by Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI).  Transport Institute outreach includes organizing and offering annual conferences, such as Supply Chain Connections, to disseminate the latest in SCM thought and practice.  The Fourth Annual Supply Chain Connections conference is coming up May 13, 2008.  On the education front, the Institute offers its Certificate in Logistics (CLog) program, in sync with the Canadian Institute of Traffic and Transportation (CITT) designation.  For more information, see http://www.citt.ca/
