    Aging Actively

    Our Aging Actively programs are aimed at older adults and focus on various activities that will develop balance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and social relationships. 

    Aging Actively classes are now included in your membership (group fitness page) and are currently not available as a registered program. Aging Actively programs are offered at our Fort Garry campus only.

    Adult swim lessons

    It's never too late to learn how to swim! Our adult aquatics programs allow for progression from class to class. Classes focus on stroke development and swimming techniques. These low-impact classes are an excellent form of exercise as they develop strength, endurance and cardio.

    Aquatic programs

    In addition to our adult swim lesson series, we also offer various unique aquatics programs that meet our diverse audiences' needs.

    Adult climbing

    The Active Living Centre features a 35-foot climbing wall with varying levels of difficulty and four auto-belays. Recreation Services offers climbing classes that allow for skill progression – teaching both fundamentals and advanced techniques.

    Group fitness

    Free classes with your membership! Group fitness classes are offered to our membership and day-pass users at no additional charge. Registration for classes is not required, and all ability levels are welcome.

    Classes run all year long and vary in content and intensity, including low to high, muscle to cardio; interval to continuous; flexibility to strength; and combinations of each.

      Martial arts

      Our martial arts programs are designed to promote progression and development for both beginners and experienced participants. Participants will learn takedowns, throws, strikes, self-defence, and joint locks. The programs focus on muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, concentration, and cardio and are available for all skills.

      Dance

      These high-energy classes will teach you how to have fun and impress on any dance floor, whether you are a novice or advanced dancer. Classes cater to both partner and individual dances to improve body awareness and coordination, cardiovascular endurance and confidence on the dance floor.

      Mind-body

      These classes connect mind and body, core and breath, and movement and balance to leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

      Mind-Body programs are offered at our Fort Garry campus only, and our Yoga and Pilates classes are included with a Recreation Services membership. Please visit our group fitness page for more details.

      Law enforcement tactical conditioning

      This conditioning program will help potential law enforcement and fire service professionals prepare for and improve their chances of completing their required fitness testing. It's an excellent workout for people who want to challenge themselves to a functional, full-body, total system workout. Classes will include HIIT workouts using both fitness equipment and the Winnipeg Police Service-PAT elements, the Canada Border Services Agency-PARE tests, and the Canadian Forces Fire Marshall’s Firefighter Pre-Entry Fitness Evaluation. Technique and practice of crucial testing elements, like the push-pull machine, will be included.

      Recreation

      Recreation programs include a variety of classes geared to those who want to learn a new activity or who want to develop their existing skills for activities and sports. Classes are designed to accommodate various levels of participants, from the beginner to the advanced.

    Training and certifications

    We offer fitness leadership development courses recognized by the Manitoba Fitness Council (MFC), First aid and CPR as well as National Lifeguard Service (NLS) certifications.

    • CPR and First aid courses

      All CPR courses are Heart & Stroke, or Red Cross certified and are taught with a maximum of 12 participants to one instructor. Participation in learning practical skills is required. All courses are taught with one mannequin per student. All materials are provided and included in the price of the course.

      A majority of our courses are held between the spring and fall term. To set up a special course of 6 or more participants, contact chineze.ofodile@umanitoba.ca for more information.

    • Manitoba Fitness Council

      Course instructors are certified MFC Fitness Leader Trainers, and content meets the NFLA (National Fitness Leadership Alliance) Performance Standards for Fitness Leaders. For information on the path to becoming a fitness leader: manitobafitnesscouncil.ca.

    • NLS certifications

      NLS is the nationally recognized lifeguard certification and is the final step to becoming a lifeguard. This course includes three certifications: Standard First Aid, CPR level C and NLS, all necessary certifications for employment as a lifeguard.
