Undergraduate Study in Family Social Sciences
Family Social Sciences is about human relationships, the development of individuals and the functioning of families. The Family Social Sciences program offers you an opportunity to learn about how family, community, and culture impact human health and well-being.
The Family Social Sciences program has been recently restructured to ensure that our areas of focus reflect issues relevant to students, as well as the needs of employers. We allow you to design an academic program tailored to your own needs by selecting one or more of the five sub-areas within Family Social Sciences, as outlined below.
AGING
This option explores the psychological, physical and social aspects of aging. You'll learn about the impact of aging on families and society as well as the promotion of healthy aging. This course of study allows you to obtain the University of Manitoba's Interfaculty Option in Aging, which will prepare you to work with seniors in community settings or in government.
CHILD & ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT
Here you'll examine factors that affect parent-child and peer relationships. You will learn how to prevent long-term difficulties in children and youth and how to promote child wellness. This option will prepare you to work with children and youth at risk, to support and assist parents, and to develop programs that will improve child and youth well being.
FAMILY, HOUSING & COMMUNITY STUDIES
This option examines housing policy and current community development initiatives. You'll learn about homelessness, poverty and street-involved youth. This course of study will prepare you to work with communities, social agencies and different levels of government where you will be able to develop, implement and deliver programs that make a difference.

FAMILY ECONOMIC HEALTH
This option explores family management as it relates to time, money, stress and conflict. You'll learn how money affects personal relationships, and why consumers spend the way they do. This option will prepare you for careers such as consumer education and financial or employment counselling. It will also prepare you to become a Certified Financial Planner after graduation.
FAMILY VIOLENCE & CONFLICT RESOLUTION
In this option you will study family violence, learn about its effects, and explore solutions. You'll study the dynamics of partner abuse, elder abuse, sibling conflict, and child maltreatment. Upon completion you will have the training necessary to work in victim service organizations, in violence prevention, or in policy analysis.
All of our option areas can be complemented with a Minor in Management offered through the I.H. Asper School of Business. This extra credential will prepare you for senior administrative roles in personal care homes, community agencies, or victim service organizations.
Additional course work required to complete the Family Social Sciences program can be selected from a number of different areas, including psychology, sociology, biology, economics, management, environmental design, or women's studies. Our classroom learning is also supplemented with the opportunity to complete a field placement, combining practical experience with hands-on learning.
