Research summary

Dr. Leong’s research area is in primary care with a focus on mental health and pharmacy practice.

Her program aims to optimize treatment strategies and to improve the quality of care for patients taking medications.

Her research includes describing the extent of psychotropic medication use from a population perspective, exploring pharmacist interventions related to identifying and caring for patients at risk of declining mental health and/or overdose, and examining outcomes related to substance use in Manitoba.

Dr. Leong has also been involved in research related to polypharmacy, oral anticancer drugs, and drugs peripregnancy.

Pharmacoepidemiology, qualitative research, and survey studies are primary methods used in this program.

Biography

Dr. Christine Leong is an associate professor in the College of Pharmacy, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba. She also practices as a clinical pharmacist in the area of primary care. She joined the College of Pharmacy in 2013.

Dr. Leong is responsible for teaching in the clinical division and experiential program. She is the course coordinator for PHMD 3014 Clinical Therapeutics 3 in the professional PharmD program. Her teaching is in the area of primary care, polypharmacy, and mental health. She also developed the physical assessment component for APPL.

Prior to her position at the College of Pharmacy, she worked as an adult inpatients pharmacist at the Health Sciences Centre. She also acted as preceptor to pharmacy students and provided continuing education presentations to pharmacists, residents, and physicians.

Dr. Leong’s research program has been supported by the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy Grant, Research Manitoba COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant, Centre for Healthcare Innovation Patient Engagement Grant, District V NABP/AACP Study Grant.

Dr. Leong is also a member of the CADTH Canadian Drug Expert Committee (CDEC), the Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network (DSEN) Steering Committee, and Adult Inquest Review Committee of the Chief Medical Examiner Office of Manitoba.
