The Section of Thoracic Surgery is located at Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, and is responsible for all thoracic surgical care in the Winnipeg Region. There are four full-time thoracic surgeons, who provide full range of thoracic surgery procedures, including surgery for lung, esophageal, gastric, tracheal and mediastinal cancers as well as specializing in minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant diseases of the chest and upper gastro-intestinal tract. There is an active interventional thoracic endoscopy program concentrating on diagnostic and therapeutic techniques delivered endoscopically without any incisions.
The Thoracic Surgery Residency Program was externally reviewed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2008, receiving full approval. The program usually accepts one resident every two years.
In order to provide better and more timely care of patients with thoracic cancers (as well a non-cancer thoracic problems), we are building a state-of-the-art Thoracic Endoscopy Unit. This will enhance our capacity to deliver advanced and minimally-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients, rapidly and safely.
