Radiology Residency Program

The Radiology training program at the University of Manitoba is committed to training Radiologists that can perform and function in all aspects of diagnostic imaging. The program is a fully accredited training program by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.


The training program is divided amongst the three main teaching facilities at the University of Manitoba: Health Sciences Centre (HSC), St. Boniface General Hospital (SBGH), and the Children's Hospital. All three centers are tertiary care centers for the province of Manitoba as well as portions of Northern Ontario, and Nunavut. The hospitals are part of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA).

Health Sciences Centre is an 800 bed tertiary center adjacent to the University of Manitoba’s Bannatyne Campus. It is the Trauma and Neurosurgery center for the province. Health Sciences Center also hosts General Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, Obstetrical and Gynecology, Vascular and other departments. The hospital is also the site for the largest and busiest Emergency department in the Province. Cancer Care Manitoba is dedicated to providing Oncology care to patients, and is also part of the Health Sciences Complex.

St. Boniface Hospitalis an additional tertiary care facility that has a large Emergency department, as well as busy Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vascular, and other departments. The St. Boniface Research Centre is located adjacent to the Hospital.

The Children's Hospital is the only Children’s hospital in the province. This hospital provides all aspects of care for the children of the province.

Residents during their 4th and 5th years can rotate through one of the community hospitals in the WRHA if they so desire. These sites are affiliated with the teaching centers, and the teaching Radiologists staff the majority of these hospitals.


The WRHA and the province of Manitoba are committed to providing state-of-the-art-imaging facilities to the population of Manitoba. Currently at the teaching sites there are:

CT scanners

  • New FLASH dual source 128 x 2 slice CT scanner, and two 64 slice CT scanners at St. Boniface hospital
  • New GE revolution CT scanner that can scan an entire heart in one heart beat, new GE Revolution HD dual energy 128 slice CT, and an additional 16 slice CT scanner for biopsies at HSC


  • One 3T and three 1.5T MRI's at HSC (including the IMRIS MRI that can be moved between two OR suites)
  • One 3T and two 1.5T MRI's at St. Boniface Hospital

Interventional Radiology

  • New Diagnostic Centre of Excellence building with state of the art biplanar fluoroscopy in two new general interventional radiology suite and an additional new neurointerventional radiology suite
  • Digital Mammography
  • 3-D ultrasound

Children's Hospital

  • New FLASH dual source 128 x 2 slice CT scanner and 1.5T MRI


One of the strengths of the training program at the University of Manitoba is the large number of fellowship trained Radiologists that provide the education to the residents. There are very few Radiology fellows as well, and this results in one-on-one teaching between the Residents and Attendings.

Weekly academic half-days are scheduled for resident education. This is on a two year rotating schedule. The summer months are dedicated to providing On-Call education for the new residents. The residents as well have daily 3:30 rounds at one of the teaching sites. These rounds are performed in a “Hot-seat” format that simulates the oral examination at the Royal College

Formal in-house physics lectures are organized on specific half days as part of the curriculum for the residents. In addition, many of the PGY-4 residents attend the UC Davis or Huda physics review course.

Residents are required to present a research project each year during their PGY2 through PGY4 years at the annual Resident Research Day.

In PGY-4 each resident attends a one month course at the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) in Silver Spring, Maryland. Each resident receives a certain amount of funding per year that can be used toward conferences, textbooks, the physics review course, AIRP, etc.
