Department Clinical Programs

The Department has several clinical programs covering a vast spectrum of adult, child and adolescent psychiatric disorders. These programs are offered through our three main teaching institutions in Winnipeg: the Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface Hospital, and Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre

Addictions Program
The major component of the addictions program is a 11-bed unit located at the Health Sciences Centre. The unit admits patients who have an active addiction and require inpatient admission for treatment of complications of drug and alcohol withdrawal, along with treatment for co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions. Ambulatory Care Program (SBGH)
The Ambulatory Care Service based at St. Boniface General Hospital is housed on the fourth floor of the McEwen Building. The services foremost aim is to help patients, recently discharged from the inpatient ward, reintegrate into the community. Read more....

Child and Adolescent Program
Under the leadership of its Section Head, Dr. A. C. Downs, the Section of Child and Adolescent (C&A) Psychiatry provides the majority of its clinical and academic teaching for psychiatry residents in their Core and Elective rotations at three primary clinical sites, namely the Health Sciences Centre (HSC), St. Boniface General Hospital (SBGH) and Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre (MATC).  Read more....

Community Psychiatry Program
The Community Psychiatry Program is comprised of a number of programs that provide mental health services to clients within primary care and specialized mental health settings including such programs as PACT (Program of Assertive Community Treatment) and the Shared Care Program. . Read more....

Consult Liaison Program (HSC)
The Consultation- Liaison Psychiatry Service provides psychiatric consultation and follow- up care to patients hospitalized at the Health Sciences Centre including the general medical and surgical wards, Intensive Care units, Rehabilitation Hospital, and Women's Hospital.  Read more....

Consult Liaison Program (SBGH)
The Consult-Liaison psychiatry service provides psychiatric consultation and follow-up care to patients hospitalized at St. Boniface General Hospital on Medical and Surgical wards, Intensive Care Units, Geriatric-Rehabilitation, Obstetrics/Gynecology Unit, Dialysis Units and Palliative Care. Eating Disorders Program
The Adult Eating Disorders Program of the Health sciences Centre is a multidisciplinary clinical service providing comprehensive assessment and treatment for individuals with eating disorders. The Program provides these services through a dedicated inpatient component, individual outpatient therapy, intensive ambulatory treatment (group therapy), readiness groups and transition/maintenance groups. Emergency Consultation Service (HSC) 
This service provides consultation 24 hours a day to emergency room physicians seeing patients with a wide range of mental health problems - an average of six cases per 24 hours. Read more....

Forensic Psychiatry Program
The adult forensic psychiatry program based at the Health Sciences Centre, is a multidisciplinary clinical program which includes inpatient, outpatient, community based and correctional facility components. The program provides court ordered assessments for fitness and criminal responsibility, consultations to Probation Services and disposition assessments for the Criminal Code Board of Review. A full range of treatment services are also provided for incarcerated, accused and convicted offenders, as well as individuals found Not Criminally Responsible and Unfit. Read more....

Geriatric Psychiatry Program
The Geriatric Psychiatry Program is based at St. Boniface Hospital with additional training opportunities for residents at the Deer Lodge Centre and Riverview Health Centre. Read more....

General Psychiatry Program
The General Psychiatry Program based at the Health Sciences Centre, is a multidisciplinary clinical program comprised of inpatient and outpatient sections. The program specializes in the comprehensive assessment and treatment of individuals with complex psychiatric disorders, in particular related to diagnostic evaluation. Additionally, the program provides secondary and tertiary psychiatric care to individuals with established major mental illness, including schizophrenia, mood and anxiety disorders, etc. Read more....

Inpatient Psychiatry Program (SBGH)
The Inpatient units at St. Boniface General Hospital are situated on the second and third floors of the McEwen Building, with 15 acute beds on each floor. The McEwen Building is connected to the main hospital by a tunnel and sits on riverside property. Read more....

Mood Disorders Program
The Mood Disorders Program of the Health Sciences Centre is a multidisciplinary clinical service providing comprehensive assessment and treatment for individuals with a wide range of mood disorders including chronic and acute conditions. The Program provides these services through a dedicated inpatient unit, day-hospital service, consultation clinics, outpatient follow-up clinics, cognitive behavioral therapy groups and an electroconvulsive therapy service. Schizophrenia Treatment and Education Program (STEP)
The Schizophrenia Treatment and Education Program (referred to as STEP) is based at the Health Sciences Centre. This multidisciplinary program includes an inpatient unit, outpatient clinics and a rehabilitation readiness component. In addition, STEP provides specialized consultation services, both medical and non-medical, regarding the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with psychotic disorders. Short Term Assessment & Treatment (STAT) Program
Program is a multidisciplinary program located at the Health Sciences Centre that provides day hospital and outpatient programs for patients requiring acute psychiatric intervention in the context of a focal crisis or destabilization, or who would otherwise benefit from short-term, intensive interventions.
