Medical Microbiology Training Program

Medical Microbiology is a branch of medicine concerned with knowledge relating to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases.  The profession consists of 3 major spheres of activity: scientific and administrative direction of a clinical microbiology laboratory, establishment and direction of a hospital infection control program, and provision of clinical consultations on the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients suffering from infectious diseases.

The Medical Microbiology Training Program at the University of Manitoba provides training to MDs wishing to pursue a career in Medical Microbiology.  Training is offered as either a 5 year program following completion of medical school or a 3 year combined program with Infectious Diseases following a minimum of 3 years residency in either Internal Medicine or Pediatrics.  Residents in the Medical Microbiology Training Program spend time on the various Infectious Diseases clinical services at 2 teaching hospitals (St. Boniface Hospital and Health Sciences Center).  Microbiology training is provided at the Health Sciences Centre Microbiology Laboratory, St. Boniface Hospital Microbiology Laboratory, Cadham Provincial Laboratory, and the National Microbiology Laboratory.

The Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Training Programs are closely integrated, with joint teaching rounds, journal reviews, plate rounds, case presentations, and research seminars.  Training with the infection control services at both teaching hospitals is available.  Public health and epidemiological training is available through a rotation at Cadham Provincial Laboratory.  Structured training is offered through a variety of microbiology courses.  Trainees are also funded to attend an off-site training program in biostatistics and epidemiology.  Additionally, resident research is encouraged and supported throughout the duration of training.
