Research Interests:
Main research interest is the development of vaccines and immunotherapeutics for human infection with Containment Level (CL) 4 viruses and CL 3 zoonotic bacterial diseases.  In particular the development of vaccines for Ebola, Marburg and Lassa virus using live recombinant vaccine vectors.

The program is also investigating the role of the immune system in the pathogenesis of highly virulent infectious diseases.  Of particular interest is the interface between the innate and adaptive immune response and currently we are investigating the roles of different dendritic cell subsets in pathogenesis and protection during viral hemorrhagic fever infection.  We are currently investigating the role of Toll-like receptor signalling in plasmacytoid, myeloid and lymphoid dendritic cells following infection with either the recombinant VSV vaccine or Ebola virus.

The program is aiming to determine what events lead to rapid immunity in the case of the vaccine and rapidly fatal systemic inflammatory responses in the case of Ebola virus.  If successful, this may be an opportunity to divert the course of early events in Ebola infections such that patients develop protective rather than pathological immune responses.
