Research Interests: Viral diseases and public health. Diagnosis and epidemiology of virus infections. Virus structure, evolution, morphogenesis and pathogenesis. Diagnostic imaging of infectious diseases. Modes of transmission of viral infections, aerobiology of virus transmission, intervention strategies including anti-virals and vaccines.

 Cao Jingxin

Cao, Jingxin (Adjunct Professor)

Research Interest: understanding how cells react to defend a virus infection and how a virus counteracts such cellular defense in order to replicate in its host cells. Our ultimate goal is to utilize the knowledge generated from such studies to design better therapeutic/prophylactic agents for viral infectious diseases.

Kindrachuk, Jason (Assistant Professor)
Research Interests
: Characterization of the molecular pathogenesis of emerging and re-emerging viruses (ex. Ebola virus, influenza viruses) that impact Canadian and global public health. A multidisciplinary approach will integrate basic research with available information regarding the clinical manifestations of disease. Initial investigations will focus on the molecular mechanisms of clinical Ebola virus disease.
The overall objectives are to:
1. Investigate the role of dysregulated barrier function in pathogenesis and disease severity for emerging and re-emerging viruses.
2. Characterize host responses to emerging and re-emerging viral infections at the level of kinase-mediated cell signaling through kinome analysis.
3. Identify and assess kinase inhibitors as novel host-targeted therapeutics in viral infections.
4. Identify disease biomarkers and novel therapeutic targets from patient samples of severe viral infections.

Qui, Xiangguo

Research Interests: Study emerging/re-emerging biosafety level (BSL) 3 and 4 viruses. My main interests are: to develop and test novel vaccine platforms for different applications including the protection against emerging pathogens; to develop and evaluate therapeutics especially mAb therapy for BSL3 and 4 viruses; to develop animal models as a tool for studying pathogenesis and identifying immune correlates of these viruses.

Safronetz, David
Research Interests: My research interests are focused on the ecology, epidemiology and pathogenesis of emerging/re-emerging rodent-borne viruses with emphasis on hantaviruses and Lassa virus. These projects frequently involve a combination of field work as well as high containment (BSL 3,4) research.

Research Interests: Investigation of molecular mechanisms underlying the early stage of HIV-1 replication, especially on HIV-1 integrase/cellular protein interactions required for HIV-1 DNA nuclear import, chromatin targeting and integration. Study on the mechanism involved in the combat between HIV-1 Vif and host defenders during HIV-1 replication, and development of new antiviral strategies by using host anti-HIV molecules. Development of new preventative and therapeutic strategies against HIV-1 infection and transmission. Development of a safe and sensitive avian influenza virus entry system for studying of the impact of H5N1 HA mutations on virus entry in human cells and for screening antiviral agents.

Research Interests: determining the immunological phenotype and genetic expression of CD4+ T-cells in individuals who are resistant to HIV infection or those who are infected but able to control their viral replication. The role of immune activation and receptor polymorphisms in HIV disease progression. Defining the role of pre-existing humoral and cellular immunity to influenza (including H1N1) and disease outcomes as well as immune responses to vaccine and exposure.

Hayglass, Kent (Professor)

Research Interests: roles played by T cells and the cytokines/chemokines involved in their regulation of specific immune responses. The main systems in which we work are those of human allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis and asthma, or mouse model systems of these disorders.

Our efforts focus on modifying existing viruses at the molecular level and/or creating hybrid viruses for safe and efficient stimulation of a protective immunity against different pathogens including containment Level (CL) 4 viruses.

Research Interests: address important questions in the life sciences with the tools of genetic analysis, molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics and uncovering the mechanism of resistance and susceptibility to HIV-1, to understand the interplay between host genetics, including human leukocyte antigens, KIR and other host genetic factors, with HIV virus, and to use this knowledge to develop vaccines and therapeutics.

To delineate the innate immune response, cellular biology will be used to map the complex network of humoral and cellular mechanisms in order to limit pathogens. Research to optimize therapeutics for infectious disease through analysis of the host's adaptive immune response will focus on the pathogen-specific epitopes that correlate with neutralizing potency.
