The Anesthesia care model for Ophthalmologic surgery is changing. The WRHA Anesthesia Program has introduced a novel and innovative Ophthalmic Sedation Practitioner training program for Registered Respiratory Therapists and Registered Nurses interested in expanding their scope of practice.
Ophthalmic Sedation Practitioners (OSP’s) will work in the Ophthalmology Program (up to 5 days per week) at the Misericordia Health Centre under the supervision of an attending Anesthesiologist. This is a direct patient-care role. The OSP will be responsible for performing selective pre-operative assessments, Anesthesia monitoring and administration of sedative and analgesic drugs during cataract and other ophthalmic surgical procedures.
