On June 23, 2016 Dr. Postl was re-appointed as Dean, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and Dean, Max Rady College of Medicine. He will concurrently continue to hold the position of Vice-Provost (Health Sciences).
Dr. Postl is a graduate of the University of Manitoba. He received his doctor of medicine degree in 1976 and the Royal College Fellowship in Community Medicine and in Pediatrics in 1981 and 1982, respectively. He was the founding president and CEO of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA), from 1999–2010.
Dr. Postl has served as chair, dept. of Pediatrics and Child Health (1994–97) and chair, dept. of Community Health Sciences (1987–94) at the University of Manitoba. He has also served as director of the J.A. Hildes Northern Medical Unit, a division of community and northern medicine (1982-87) and as director of the faculty’s community medical residency program (1984–91).
He has conducted over 30 academic and program reviews throughout Canada, and continues to serve as an appraiser and external reviewer for research foundations, agencies and academic journals. He recently conducted a review of aeromedical transport for the province of Manitoba and review of the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Postl’s research, published works and professional involvement focus on Aboriginal child health, circumpolar health and human resource planning. His contributions in these areas, combined with his experience as a visiting pediatrician to communities in northern Manitoba and Nunavut, contributed to him earning the Canadian Association of Pediatric Health Centre’s Child Health Award of Distinction (2006) and the Inter-Professional Association on Native Employment’s Champion of Aboriginal Employment award in 2007.
Dr. Postl has served and continues to serve on a number of committees and boards of provincial and national associations, foundations, institutes and other organizations. He was a founding board member, Canadian Patient Safety Institute (2003-06); Federal Wait Time advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada (2005-06); chair, Manitoba Centre for Health Policy advisory committee (1995-2011); and chair, Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (2000-12).
Currently, Dr. Postl serves as chair, Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHR); member CIHR Strategy for Patient Oriented Research; member, Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada Dean’s Council; co-chair C.D. Howe Health Policy Council; member, C.D. Howe National Council; co-chair, Premier’s Council on Poverty, Education and Citizenship; member, board of directors – Manitoba Medical Service Foundation; and chair, Research Manitoba council.
He was inducted as a fellow in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2011 and invested in the Order of Manitoba in 2012.
