How to become a patient

Who can become a patient?

We treat patients of any age, including children, teenagers and adults. When you begin treatment depends on the growth and development of the jaw as well as the stage of tooth eruption. We also have many adult patients in our clinic who have chosen to pursue orthodontic treatment later in life.

Be aware

We only accept patients that have excellent oral hygiene.

How to become a patient

Patients are accepted by referral only. Please ask your dentist to complete the oral hygiene/restorative clearance form and submit the completed form to uofmortho@umanitoba.ca.

Considerations before applying to be a patient

Wait list

Our services typically have a wait list. When you reach the top of the list, you will be notified of your appointment time and supplied with paperwork that must be completed and brought with you.  You may have to wait six to nine months before receiving that first appointment.

Teaching needs

The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is an educational facility. If the care you need does not fit the teaching requirements of our program, you may not be accepted as a patient.

Clinic hours

Our clinics operate during the daytime within standard business hours. If missing school or work for appointments is not an option, a private practice might suit your needs better.

Flexibility

Clinics operate on a limited schedule. For example, one clinic may only be offered on alternating Tuesdays, while another is limited to one Monday each month. Based on your clinic assignment, there will only be certain days we can schedule your appointments, with the exception of emergencies. Flexibility is a must for all patients.

Fees and payment

  • Costs

Visiting the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is a great way get the dental care you need at a more affordable price. Our fees are significantly lower than the various specialties listed in the Manitoba Dental Association Fee Guide, often by as much as 50 per cent.

  • Payment for services

Payment is expected after each appointment. We accept cash, direct debit, credit cards.  If you have dental insurance coverage, please be aware that we do not accept payment directly from your insurance company. We will provide you with necessary forms you will need to arrange re-imbursement from your insurance.

  • Scheduled payments

For patients undergoing extensive treatment over a period of time, such as orthodontic or prosthodontic care, payment does not have to be made all at once. Talk to us about scheduling payments throughout your treatment. Please note that full payment is required by the time treatment is complete.

Fees are dependent on the procedure performed and rates at the College are subject to change. All costs will be discussed before services are performed, giving you the opportunity to ask questions and discuss options.
