Brandi Shabaga is a Technician in the Stable Isotope Lab at the Manitoba Isotope Research Facility (MIRF), and a Radiation Laboratory Supervisor (LRS), in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Manitoba.
As part of the MIRF research group, she has conducted laboratory- and field-based research directed at understanding the geochemistry of fluids associated with Earth and anthropogenic systems. She has worked in co-operation with government and World organizations such as the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where she has presented her work at national and international conferences and workshops.
In the laboratory, her responsibilities include the maintenance and operation of a Delta V plus mass spectrometer (IRMS), elemental analyzer (EA), high temperature conversion elemental analyzer (TC/EA), and gas chromatography/combustion (GC/C) device, training undergraduate and graduate students in the lab, maintaining and updating the MIRF website, and corresponding with the Environmental Health & Safety Office as an RLS for the department. Her additional laboratory skills include wet chemical (e.g., solid-fluid) experiments, technique development, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques.
