Undergraduate Bursaries

January 12, 2010 Update:

According to the Financial Aid and Awards (FAA) web site <http://umanitoba.ca/student/fin_awards/>:

"B U R S A R Y  RESULTS - Were out by December 15th, 2009. Please check your tuition account in Student Aurora to find out if you have been awarded a bursary. Students may only keep bursary money if they are registered in both Fall & Winter terms (1-term only students are not eligible for bursaries). Only successful recipients will be contacted by mail before Dec. 23rd, 2009. Ensure your mailing address in Aurora Student is up-to-date! Refund cheques for tuition fee over-payments will begin to be disbursed after February 15th, 2010. Should you require your credit refund before that time."

Neither the Faculty of Engineering Awards Officer nor the members of the Faculty of Engineering Awards Committee have the authority to release recipient names or to inform recipients of monies received. You must contact the FAA staff for this information.

Note that a small amount of the Engineering Surcharge Bursary will be disbursed in January, 2010.

The deadline for application for bursaries is traditionally October 1 in any given year.

If you believe you may need a bursary for the 201090 to 201110 terms, here's what you need to do:

1. Make sure that your contact information is current in Aurora Student.

2. Apply for a Canada Student Loan. The deadline is usually in Summer, so don't leave this step to Fall. You may not be eligible, but if you are, whether you negotiate the loan or not, you increase your chances for having more of your financial need covered.

3. Visit the  Financial Aid and Awards (FAA) web site or office (4th floor UMSU) to acquire an FAA application form. Complete it and submit it to FAA by the deadline given by that office, which traditionally is Oct. 1. When you drop off the application, you can ask that the staff check it over to ensure you have not missed anything that might delay processing. **The General Bursary Application form must be completed in order for you to be considered for Engineering bursaries. ** The information on it determines how much financial need you will be assessed as having by the FAA staff.

4. Visit this web site for details about how to apply for bursaries available only for Engineering undergraduate students. The deadline for submitting applications is the same date as for FAA; that is Oct.1 at 4:00pm.These applications (which typically ask you to relate your leadership skills and community involvement) differ from the FAA one mentioned in step 3 (which gathers information used to determine your financial need.)

Please note that most Engineering bursaries do not require an Engineering application. However, in order to be eligible for any Engineering bursary, including the Engineering Surcharge Bursary, you must submit an FAA bursary application, by the Oct. 1 deadline.

You may be wondering: "What's the difference? Why do I need to submit two or more applications?" The FAA application form determines your eligible financial need. Application for Engineering bursaries provide information relevant to a particular award. For example, a donor may prefer that a student who has shown leadership in the community be the recipient; the application allows the student to detail his or her activities supporting this quality. Since each donor may have slightly different preferences, each award requiring an application may have its own suite of questions. There may be overlap, but you can copy and paste your answers and be assured that the Awards Committee will have what it needs to consider you for any given award.

NB: The Awards Committee is working hard to improve the online application and information dissemination process.
