Graduate Program

Upon completion of your undergraduate degree, you may wish to continue your studies in one of our graduate programs.

The Faculty of Engineering is recognized internationally for its research achievements in Biosystems, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Geological, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering. The Faculty is presently home to a University of Manitoba Industrial Research Chair sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and private industry. This Chair is in Aerospace Materials. The Faculty is the headquarters of a National Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS) and participates in three National Networks of Centres of Excellence in microelectronics, telecommunications, and robotics.

The Faculty also participates with TRLabs in research on telecommunications. In response to advances in technology, the Faculty of Engineering uses state-of-the-art equipment for both teaching and research. One notable facility is the Antenna Laboratory, where antennas for portable communications devices are tested in a joint venture with industry. Another major installation is the Structural Engineering and Construction Research and Development Facility. It includes a 2,500 square-foot structural floor and a 1.2 million-pound cyclic loading machine that can test large-scale bridge and building components.

Engineers from the University of Manitoba travel to many countries as part of development and research ventures. One such program, in which the Faculty participated, was a federally-funded program in the Ukraine, where Canada is sharing in the retraining of military scientists for peaceful technological research.

Whether building better bridges and roads or growing crystals in a space shuttle flight, expertise within the Faculty of Engineering is available to meet any challenge. Faculty members collaborate with farm organizations, major manufacturers and utilities, and all levels of government. Research within the Faculty generates external support amounting to approximately $6.5 million per year. Sponsors include corporations in the public and private sectors, and government sources such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
