TRANSFER: M.Sc. to Ph.D.

 



 

IN ALL INSTANCES...

  1. PRIOR Permission to Transfer must be given by the Student's Academic Advisor
  2. TRANSFERS are only allowed within Departments
    i.e. students in a Masters Program in Mechanical cannot transfer to a Ph.D. Program in Electrical
  3. GPA:   A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and the student must be in GOOD STANDING
  4. COURSEWORK:  Completed in the Master's Program would normally be counted in the Ph.D. Program
  5. TIME:  Time spent in the Master's Program would normally be counted in the Ph.D. Program.
    1. Example: If you have been in the Electrical & Computer Engineering's Master's Program for ~1-year, 1-year is subtracted from your Ph.D. Program.
  6. UMGF:  Transfers will usually impact awards
  7. CONTINUOUS REGISTRATION:  Students must maintain continuous registration in the Master's Program until the transfer is complete
  8. APPLICATION
  9. APPLICATION FEES:  If the transfer is made within one year, no additional application fee must be paid
  10. CREDIT HOURS:  See below
    1. Student WITHOUT a Master's
    2. Student WITH a Master's
  11. APPROVAL FOR TRANSFER must be received from
    1. The Student's Academic Advisor
    2. The Department
    3. The Faculty of Graduate Studies

 

 


 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. Fill-in a NEW,  ONLINE Admissions Application Form at
     http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/  
    1. On the 2nd page, under "NAME OF INSTITUTION" please write  TRANSFER TO PHD  
    2. Under Payment Section please write  WILL SUBMIT CHEQUE LATER
    3. After about 1-day, send the Graduate Student Advisor an email to say you submitted an application to transfer
      1. Send your Full Name (as it appears on the application)
      2. Send your Application Number (begins with GS)
  2. RECOMMENDATION LETTER to TRANSFER TO PH.D. PROGRAM:
    1. Your Academic Advisor must provide a brief memo as to why you should be transferred to the Ph.D. Program
    2. SIGNATURES:  The memo must be signed by
      1. Your Academic Advisor
      2. The Graduate Chairperson
  3. APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS & OTHER PAPERWORK
    1. You do NOT need any other recommendations or paperwork for this application
  4. Fill-in the PROGRAM ROUTE CHANGE FORM
    1. Please sign this form
    2. Obtain the signatures of your Advisor and Co-Advisor (if applicable)
    3. Remit the form to the Graduate Student Advisor
  5. DEADLINE
    1. The Faculty must receive the Transfer Request from the Department at least one-month prior to term which the student intends to begin his/her program
    2. The Department must receive the Transfer Request from the Student & Academic Advisor at least one-month prior to the Faculty of Graduate Studies deadlline
    3. Transfers must be COMPLETE within the first 18-months after initial registration in the Master's Program
    4. Paperwork is not processed during holidays, breaks, university closures, etc. -- please plan accordingly
  6. We'll try to process your application before the next intake deadline date or by the date discussed
  7. Please also apply for the IGSS ($5,400 Award) for your next Academic Year as a Ph.D. student  http://umanitoba.ca/ece/curr_students/graduate/igss.html 
    • Deadline is usually March 1
    • You MUST apply by March 1 BEFORE your transfer date to ensure receipt of funds

 

 


 

STUDENTS WITHOUT A MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE

  • TRANSFER WITHIN 12-MONTHS
    • Ph.D. Fees will be assessed for 3-years.
    • Recommendation to Transfer must be made within 12-months of the student's commencement of the Master's program
  •  TRANSFER AFTER 12-MONTHS
    • Ph.D. Fees will be assessed for 2-years.
      (as they will have already paid fees for the Master’s program)
  • TRANSFER WITHIN 18-MONTHS
    • Ph.D. Fees will be assessed for 3-years
    • Recommendation to Transfer must be made within 18-months of the student's commencement of the Master's program

 

  • START DATE OF YOUR PH.D. PROGRAM
    Regardless of when you transfer to the Ph.D. Program the Start Date of your Ph.D. program is the start date of your M.Sc. program -- this does not change

 

  •  CREDIT HOURS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS PH.D. PROGRAM
  • Without an M.Sc.:
    • 24-credit hours at the 7000 level
  • The Faculty will review your records and inform you of your credit-hour requirement in our Offer of Admissions Letter

 

 

 


 

STUDENTS WITH A MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE

  • TRANSFER WITHIN 12-MONTHS
    • Transfer must be made within 12-months of registration of the student's M.Sc. program
    • The application fee is usually waived
    • Fees assessed towards the Master’s program will be deducted from the full 2-years of Ph.D. program fees

 

  • TRANSFER AFTER 12-MONTHS
    • Must pay an application fee
    • In addition, fees will be assessed as a 3-year Ph.D

 

  • START DATE OF YOUR PH.D. PROGRAM
    Regardless of when you transfer to the Ph.D. Program the Start Date of your Ph.D. program is the start date of your M.Sc. program -- this does not change

 

  • CREDIT HOURS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS PH.D. PROGRAM
    • With an M.Sc. degree but not declared on Admissions form:
      • 18-credit hours
        • 12-credit hours at the 7000 level
        • 6-credit hours at the 3000+ level
    • With an M.Sc. degree and declared on Admissions form
      • 12-credit hours at the 7000 level
    • The Faculty will review your records and inform you of your credit-hour requirement in our Offer of Admissions Letter

POSSIBLE TRANSFER TO PH.D. PROGRAM WITHIN 12-MONTHS

 

If the "Transfer Comment" was NOT on the M.Sc. admission letter and / or the transfer request was not requested in the first 12-months of the student's registration in the Master's Program:

  • In these cases, students must pay full tuition for first 3-years of the Ph.D. program.
  • In this case, students may petition to request a tuition reduction
