Tranferring to the Ph.D. Program

  • WITH a Master's BUT "Transfer"

    TIME / DEADLINES: 

    • Transfers must be submit to FGS at least 4-weeks prior to the intended transfer term.
      • The ECE Graduate Program requires the completed paperwork at least 2-months prior to the inteded transfer
      • Paperwork is NOT processed during holidays, breaks, university closures, etc. -- plan accordingly
    • Transfers must be COMPLETE within the first 18-months after registration.

     

     

    WITH A MASTER'S DEGREE OR EQUIVALENCY

    Where a student with a Master’s degree or equivalent BUT who was initially admitted and registered into the Master’s program may be transferred to the Ph.D. program

    • Allowed only within the same department
    • Recommendation required from the
      • Student’s Advisor
      • Department Head
    • GPA: 
      • A minimum 3.0 GPA is required
      • The student must be in "Good Standing" 
    • TIME PERIOD
      • Made at the time of admission to the Master’s Program
        (i.e. “POSSIBLE TRANSFER TO PH.D. PROGRAM WITHIN 12-MONTHS” put on Student's application) and
      • Application to the Ph.D. must occurs within 12 months of the initial registration in the Master’s program.
    • TRANSFER M.Sc. COURSEWORK & Maximum Time in program
      • The coursework completed in the Master’s program would normally become a part of the Ph.D. program
    • SUBMIT AN ONLINE APPLICATION
      • Submit an online application with FGS:  http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/
      • Mark your application as TRANSFER  
      • APPLICATION FEE is waived -- this should be AUTOMATIC
        • Mark your APPLICATION as TRANSFER
        • If you are accidentally charged a fee let us know -- you will be issued a refund
    • FEES
      • Fees assessed towards the Master’s program will be deducted from the full 2 years of Ph.D. program fees
        • 1st Year's Fees -- Fees paid in the UofM Master's program is counted in the Ph.D.
        • 2nd Year's Fees -- One full year as a Ph.D. student
    • STATUS
      • Student considered second (2nd) year in Ph.D. program -- when transferring with an M.Sc. or equivalency
    • FUNDING
      • Students are cautioned that such transfers may impact on the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) duration
    • START DATE OF PH.D. PROGRAM
      • The Start Date of your Ph.D. program is the start date of your M.Sc. program -- this does not change
    • CREDIT HOURS REQUIRED TO GRADUATE
      • 12-credit hours (undergraduate credits will not count towards graduation)
    • REQUIRED FOR APPLICATION

     


     

     

    WITHOUT A MASTER'S DEGREE    

     

    Students who have not completed a Master’s program may transfer to the Ph.D. program

    • Within the same department
    • With a recommendation from the
      • student's advisor
      • department
    • APPROVAL must be given by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies
      • Submit an ONLINE application to FGS which may be found at http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/  
      • Write "TRANSFER" across the top of the application in large, bold letters
      • Submit application and processing fee to FGS -- no other paperwork is required
      • If approved you will receive an Offer Letter in about 3-4 weeks
    • GPA & GOOD STANDING
      • A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required
      • The student must be in "Good Standing" 
    • DEADLINE:
      • The recommendation must be made within 18-months of the student’s commencement of the Master’s program
    • TRANSFER M.Sc. COURSEWORK & Maximum Time in program
      • The coursework completed in the Master’s program would normally become a part of the Ph.D. program
    • SUBMIT AN ONLINE APPLICATION
      • Submit an online application with FGS:  http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/
      • Mark your application as TRANSFER  
      • Online Form:
        • DO NOT SUBMIT transcripts, language exams, references
        • IN THE REFERENCE AREA: type-in your name and email and the Graduate Student Advisor's name and email
        • UMGF AREA:  type-in "NO" -- the Dept. will give you a form in February
      • APPLICATION FEE is waived -- this should be AUTOMATIC
        • Mark your APPLICATION as TRANSFER
        • If you are accidentally charged a fee let us know -- you will be issued a refund
    • START DATE OF PH.D. PROGRAM
      • The Start Date of your Ph.D. program is the start date of your M.Sc. program -- this does not change
    • MAXIMUM TIME IN PROGRAM -- SHORTENED
      • The number of years spent in the Master’s program would be counted as years in the Ph.D. program
        • this means that the maximum time to finish your Ph.D. would be less the number of years spent in the M.Sc. program prior to the transfer to the Ph.D.
    • CREDIT HOURS REQUIRED -- 24-Credit Hours
    • FEES
      • Transfer WITHIN 12 months of initial registration in M.Sc.
        • Ph.D. Fees will be assessed for 3 years
          • The 1 year spent in the M.Sc. program counts as 1 year of Ph.D. fees
          • 2 more years of Full Ph.D. fees must be paid
      • Transfer AFTER 12 months of initial registration in M.Sc.
        • Ph.D. Fees will be assessed for 2 years -- as they will have already paid fees for the Master’s program
    • FUNDING
      • Students are cautioned that such transfers may impact on the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) duration
    • DEADLINE
      • must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at least ONE (1) MONTH PRIOR to the term for which the student intends to commence the Ph.D. program
    • REQUIRED FOR APPLICATION

     


    STUDENTS WITH A MASTER'S DEGREE, BUT  “POSSIBLE TRANSFER TO PH.D. PROGRAM WITHIN 12-MONTHS”  WAS NOT PUT ON THE STUDENT'S APPLICATION

    Transfer comment NOT on the M.Sc. admission letter and do not make the request in the first 12-months:

     

    • In these cases, students have to pay the additional year's fee (3 years in total) of program fees even though they are academically in a 2-year program (12 credit hours)
    • You may petition to request a tuition reduction 
       

     


    APPLICATION PROCEDURE (HOW TO)

    1. Fill-in a ONLINE application form at http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/  
    2. On the 2nd page, under "NAME OF INSTITUTION" please write  TRANSFER TO PHD  
    3. Pay the $100 processing fee either online or by in person by cheque  
    4. Fill-in the Program Route Change Form
      1. Please sign this form
      2. Obtain the signatures of your Advisor and Co-Advisor (if applicable)
      3. Remit the form to the Graduate Student Advsior
    5. After about 1 day, send me an email to let me to start looking for your application
      The entire application may take 1 to 7 days to appear online.  
    6. We'll try to process your application before the next intake deadline date  
    7. Please also apply for the IGSS ($5,400 Award) for your next Academic Year as a Ph.D. student  http://umanitoba.ca/ece/curr_students/graduate/igss.html 
      • Deadline is usually March 1
      • You MUST apply by March 1 BEFORE your transfer date to ensure receipt of funds
