At the beginning of September, projects are matched with design groups who possess engineering skills that are appropriately applicable, and the design group initially meets with the company/institution to discuss and define the project objectives.

Over the course of the semester, the students develop a conceptual design based on the objectives and deliverables agreed upon by the company/institution and the students. Project meetings, on at least a bi-weekly basis, are scheduled with company/institution representatives, further imrpoving the students' understanding of the project and the needs of the client.

As the project is analyzed and developed by the students, they will:

  • Apply engineering knowledge to open-ended "real" design projects.
  • Become acquainted with the steps and tools in the engineering design process.
  • Design and evaluate from technical, practical, financial, social, and environmental perspectives.
  • Build teamwork skills, and prepare for an industry workplace setting.
  • Apply techniques in team management.
  • Learn to maintain design records, such as journals and meeting minutes.
  • Communicate with clients, product users, and others related to the project.
  • Gain a sense of professioinalism.

A final report of the project, which may include sketches, feasibility studies, an economic analysis, drawings, and prototype construction, is produced and presented to the company/institution, along with an oral presentation in December.
