To ensure that our students gain as much as possible from their design experience and to maintain the satisfaction of our industry partners each design project should strive to meet the criteria listed below with the intended learning objectives in mind.  We are more than happy to work with you to ensure that our students as well as you have a successful and rewarding engineering design experience. If you have any questions or would like help defining a project, please feel free to contact our design project coordinator.

An ideal Design Project would be:

  • Open Ended - Allowing the students to investigate and evaluate several options before pursuing and developing a final design.

  • Iterative - Providing the industry partner with ample opportunity to give feedback through each stage of development.

  • Well Defined - With a clear set of goals and established design constraints.

The learning objectives of the course are to provide students with:

  • A real-world design experience
  • An understanding of the need to meet client demands.
  • Experience in project management and scheduling
  • Experience in determining and evaluating functional requirements.
  • Communicating the design outcomes in terms of specifications and technical reports.
  • Understanding the role of various additional design requirements such as design for environment and design for manufacturability.
