Co-op Program - Employers

The Civil Engineering Co-op Program is one of the oldest co-ops on campus, and has provided over sixty employers and government departments with top quality students over the last twenty years.  Enrolment is limited.  Students are selected on the basis of academic performance and general aptitude. Co-op students are bright and enthusiastic.  They have above average marks and up-to-date computer skills.  Students are required to take career skills seminars, and take the responsibilities of the program seriously.

Term Dates:

 Summer Term:  May 1 - August 31
 Fall Term:  September 1 - December 31
 Winter Term:  January 1 - April 30

Approximately fifty students are available for the summer term. February is the best month for recruiting, although students continue to be placed in March and April.

A limited number of students may be available for the fall and winter terms. Recruiting takes place in July/August and November/December respectively.

The first step in securing a co-op student is to submit a job description.  Job descriptions must be approved to ensure that the position has adequate Civil Engineering content. All projects must be supervised by a Professional Engineer.

Employers e-mail job descriptions to the co-op coordinator, who posts them on a secure web-site. Resumes are usually collected at the co-op office and sent to employers by courier. Some companies prefer on-line or e-mail applications. To be assured of the best candidates, employers are encouraged to conduct interviews as soon as possible.  Interviews can be scheduled on-site or on campus. Telephone interviews can be arranged for out-of-town employers.

Work term starting and ending dates are flexible, but work terms must be at least 14 weeks long.  Students may be placed for single work terms, or two or three consecutive work terms.  Employers are expected to provide mentoring and on-going feedback to the student for the duration of the placement. Co-op students are paid competitive wages.

Upon completion of each work term, employers complete an employer evaluation form, and the APEGM MIT form (if appropriate).  Employers are also expected to provide an exit interview.

Employers are eligible for special government funding to subsidize wages for students employed in career related jobs.
