Civil engineers plan, design, supervise construction, manage, and maintain facilities that are familiar to most people. Civil engineers increasingly use new technologies such as Geographical Information/Positioning Systems, advanced materials, remote sensing and monitoring in their projects.
What are the typical courses?
Students have a common first year of engineering before entering Civil Engineering. Once in the program, typical courses include engineering materials, fluid mechanics, structural design, infrastructure engineering and construction management, finite element methods, application of geographical information systems, economics, transportation planning, environmental analysis and design, hydrology, technology and society, and geotechnical analysis and design.
What choices do I have in Civil Engineering?
Students may choose to specialize by pursuing an environmental engineering option. You also choose five technical electives, including topics such as watershed processes, hazardous waste, transportation systems, engineering management and the environment, environmental systems, geotechnical engineering, or structural dynamics.
Is there a practical or work experience component?
The Civil Engineering program integrates design into many courses. Electives strongly focus on design. An optional co-op education program is available to incorporate valuable work experience into the program. The co-op program involves the addition of three to four work terms, totaling twelve to sixteen months of paid work experience.

Why should I take Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba?
