To help prepare and guide students through the practicum, the SEO online practicum guide has been prepared to communicate the goals, policies and procedures of the Faculty of Education to all those involved in the school experience courses of the B.Ed. program.

About School Experiences

School Experiences are integral to learning about teaching and becoming a teacher. Together with our school partners, we have developed an innovative program of school experiences that is challenging, rewarding and educative. The following five principles guide the professional learning of teacher candidates during these experiences:

  1. Collaboration – Sharing experiences, constructing understandings, negotiating agendas among all participants, including: students, collaborating teachers, the larger school community, teacher candidates, faculty members, and faculty advisors;

  2. Inquiry and critical reflection – Examining past and present perceptions, interrogating beliefs and practices, framing new questions, making systematic written observations, collecting and evaluating artifacts and professional readings, articulating findings;

  3. Integration – understanding the connections between educational institutions and the larger community; between the university and schools;  among faculty courses;  among curriculum areas;  among the diverse learners in each learning community;

  4. Diversity of experiences and caring – Using in-school time and whole-school experiences to observe, apply, adapt and assess “best practices” for working with a diversity of students in caring ways. An understanding of these “best practices” will be developed with the guidance of collaborating teachers and faculty, and with the support of professional publications and Department of Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth documents; and

  5. Preparation for lifelong learning – Assuming personal and professional responsibility for continuous learning by seeking out and becoming involved in professional development opportunities at the school, in the division and in the larger educational community.

Teacher candidates and school personnel should become familiar with these guiding principles, and all other material in this guide.
