Master of Dentistry Program in Periodontics

Program Description

The degree program in Periodontology offered at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Manitoba is an accredited Master of Dentistry program in Periodontics. Its goal is to provide advanced education and training in the field of periodontology and surgical implant dentistry to prepare graduates to pursue careers in clinical practice, academics and research. The program minimum of 36 months duration and two to three dentists are accepted every 2 continuous years (total of 5 residents in the program at any given time).

During the three years of study, a considerable portion of time is devoted to clinical practice and in exposing residents to all facets of modern periodontology and surgical implantology. In addition residents will receive training to certify them in the use of in-office IV conscious sedation.

The program is further enhanced by close collaboration with Oral Pathology, as well as with the Graduate Orthodontic Program through joint seminars and case presentations. In addition, two faculty prosthodontics rotate through the graduate periodontics clinic to provide comprehensive treatment planning experience for the residents.

From a research perspective, emphasis is placed on clinical research with expectations of original research and a manuscript suitable for submission for publication. Research in the oral systemic domain is of particular interest in the division, since the Faculty of Dentistry has a unique center in oral systemic disease.

Strengths of the program include low instructor/resident ratio, well balanced clinical and didactic programs with a critical approach to literature, opportunities for clinical research and a comprehensive IV sedation course administered by the medical anesthesia department.

Equipment and Facilities:

The Graduate Program in Periodontology has at its disposal a graduate clinic containing seven fully equipped dental units, radiographic equipment, and treatment planning space. Residents also have a rotation to the hospital dental clinic at the adjacent Health Sciences Centre. Residents have personal lockers, office space and dental assistants and hygienists, and dental hygiene students are available to support activities of the Program. In addition to full time Periodontists, practicing Periodontists from the community also teach in the Program part-time.

Residents are required to supply their own instruments (est. $6,200.00) and a camera set-up suitable for clinical photography (est. $2,400.00). They are expected to have a suitable laptop computer and office software.

The student will accumulate a minimum of 1,200 hours clinical experience of which approximately 100 hours will be spent in the hospital dental clinic. The clinical program will lead to proficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of various types of periodontal diseases, management of patients with facial pain and temporomandibular joint dysfunction and experience in implantology.

Research:

Research project in a specified area selected in consultation with the Program Director and the Department Head, is a requirement.

Admission:

Applicants for admission to the program of study leading to a Master of Dentistry (Periodontics) must have:

• Dental Degree
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) applicants must attain a score of at least 550; IELTS applicants must attain a score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 on the written component will also be accepted.
