Master of Dentistry Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The Master of Dentistry (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) which is four years in length includes a four-year hospital residency for which a Post-graduate Training Certificate is awarded. The program has full accreditation from the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada. The primary objective of the program is to train dentists to become competent, ethical Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons for practice in Canada, and to provide them with a scientifically based curriculum which will prepare them for the challenges they will face in the development of their speciality, throughout their professional careers.

The clinical program provides comprehensive training in all the major areas generally included within the scope of practice of an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Students are provided with opportunities to attend and present papers at National and International conferences related to aspects of their speciality and an external elective rotation is permitted subject to approval of the Program Director.

Please Note: There is usually an intake of one student each year and one International Student every other year.

Program Description

The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada and provides a progressive training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including graduate level courses in applied basic sciences and clinical rotations in:

  • Anaesthesia
  • Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Emergency Room Medicine
  • An elective experience is also possible.

The program commences on July 1st and is forty-eight months in length, including vacations and public holidays. Residents are required to complete a project and publish in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Some support may be granted to allow travel to national or international specialty meetings and courses. Residents receive a stipend including benefits in accordance with the current collective agreement. The Master’s degree is awarded upon satisfactory completion of all program requirements as set out in the University of Manitoba's current calendar. A certificate of hospital residency training is also awarded.

Faculty supervises every student in at least one research project during the training period and their interests provide for a wide spectrum of clinically related topics: Some examples of areas in which faculty have published and have a continuing interest are:

  • dental implants
  • maxillofacial trauma
  • temporomandibular disorders
  • cleft lip and palate
  • dento-facial deformity
  • surgical pathology
  • Therapeutics

Collaborative research with other departments is encouraged and does occur.

  • Advanced Human Macroscopic (Gross) Anatomy
  • Biostatistics

 

Research Project:

Residents are required to write an essay or carry out a research project and publish in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Research interests of members of the Section of Oral Surgery include:

  • temporomandibular joint disease
  • oral cancer
  • clinical trials of dental implants
  • orthognathic surgery
  • cleft palate surgery
  • maxillofacial trauma

Essay/Research Project to be completed in fourth year. Additional courses may be assigned in support of the Essay/Research Project.

 

Clinical Requirements:

The program provides a progressive training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including graduate-level courses in applied basic sciences and clinical rotations in the Health Sciences Centre in the Departments of:

  • Anaesthesia
  • Medicine
  • Surgical Intensive Care
  • Emergency Room Medicine
  • Surgery.

The M.Dent in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is awarded upon satisfactory completion of all program requirements as set out in the University of Manitoba's current calendar.

Applications will be considered from qualified persons who:

  • Are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada;
  • Are in possession of a dental qualification which makes them eligible for licensure in a province of Canada;
  • Hold a National Dental Examining Board of Canada certificate;
  • Comply with provincial requirements for licensing of Dental interns and residents;
  • A successfully completed English language proficiency test is required of all applicants unless they have received a high school diploma or university degree from Canada or one of the countries listed on the English language proficiency test exemption list available at URL:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) applicants must attain a score of at least 550; IELTS applicants must obtain a score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 on the written component will also be accepted.
