New Students

All students who are new to the University of Manitoba (UM) must apply for admission. Applications are available at umanitoba.ca under Apply for Admission. Applications are also available in the Admissions Office at 424 University Centre or by calling (204) 474-8808 (toll free 1-888-216-7011).

Regular Students

Students who are applying to the UM on the basis of high school standing will be admitted to University 1, a first year program designed to provide a foundation for studies in Arts, Science, and the professional disciplines.

Exceptions to the University 1 pathway exist for applicants to the Faculty of Engineering, the diploma programs for the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, the School of Arts (Studio programs), the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music, and General Studies. Students may apply directly to these programs.

Students who have completed 24 credit hours or more of university level courses at other institutions, and students who have completed at least one year at recognized community or technical colleges may apply directly to the faculty or school of their choice. Faculties offering degree programs by Distance and Online Education (DE) are: Faculty of Arts; Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources; Faculty of Social Work; Faculty of Nursing (Baccalaureate Program for Registered Nursing); and Faculty of Education (Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Education Program). Credit for work completed at other institutions is assessed by Admissions at the point of admission (except for General Studies applicants) in accordance with the rules and regulations of the faculty concerned.

Mature Students

Students who have not completed senior level secondary school, are 21 years of age and older, and wish to complete degree programs at the UM will be admitted to University 1.

Special Students

Special Students apply to General Studies (Extended Education). Special Students are those who wish to enrol in degree credit courses for professional or personal interest and who are not seeking to complete a degree currently. These students may require degree courses to meet specific entrance requirements, for career development, or to make informed decisions about career direction.

Visiting Students

Visiting students are students who are registered at another institution who are taking one or more courses at the UM on a Letter of Permission from their home university. These students apply for admission to General Studies (Extended Education).

Former Students (Re-admission, Continuing and Returning Students)

Former students who have attended other institutions since their last registration at the UM must apply to the Admissions Office for re-admission unless this attendance was on a Letter of Permission from the UM.

Students whose past registration was in the following faculties but have not been in attendance for one or more years should seek formal permission to re-register from the office of the dean or director of the faculty or school concerned: Agricultural and Food Sciences; Arts; General Studies; Engineering; Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources; Human Ecology; Science; Social Work; or University 1. Formal re-application is not required. Returning students in all other programs must contact their faculty directly for re-admission advice.

Former Visiting Students who wish to re- register as Visiting Students may do so without re-application. Letters of Permission must be submitted to the General Studies student advisor prior to registration.

Students who have graduated from the UM and wish to resume studies must re-apply for admission.
