"NET"-iquette: Tips on how to be courteous in a chat room or discussion

  • Do not type entire passages in upper-case letters. This behaviour is the equivalent to screaming over the Internet and is generally regarded as being impolite.
  • Keep your contributions focused on the actual subject of the discussion. If somebody else posts messages that are off-topic, do not reply to them.
  • Keep in mind that when you are chatting with people over the Internet, they do not have the benefit of hearing the inflection of your voice. Be aware of how the words that you are typing may be interpreted by the other people who are reading them.
  • Remember that your classmates may not be fully familiar with references to TV, pop culture, figures of speech or slang terms. Try to keep your messages as clear as possible so that they are accessible to everyone. If you use some sort of reference that may not be clear to others, take a moment to explain what it means.
  • Keep in mind that your classmates and your instructors have the ability to read any messages that you have posted. Be courteous and treat others the way you would like to be treated.
