Program details

The BAIS program is offered by the Faculty of Arts in collaboration with Extended Education.

Expected duration: Variable. Students study part-time and complete the degree at their own pace.

This program is designed for working adults who have completed some post-secondary education. The degree requires areas of concentration rather than the traditional major and minor requirement. This approach provides more flexibility to choose courses based on your interests and needs.

The BAIS program is 90 credit hours, divided into three components:

  • 21 credit hours of foundation courses
  • 18 credit hours of an area of concentration
  • 51 credit hours of elective courses

For full course descriptions, please visit the Academic Calendar.

Degree requirements

The BAIS degree is made up of three components: foundation courses, concentration courses and elective courses. Students must satisfy the following program requirements.

  • 36 credit hours must be completed at the University of Manitoba to satisfy the degree residency requirement.
  • 9 credit hours of the concentration must be completed at the University of Manitoba to satisfy the concentration residency requirement.
  • 30 credit hours must be taken from courses taught by the Faculty of Arts (may include up to 12 credit hours from the department of mathematics or art history courses considered as humanities, or which have been accepted on transfer as equivalent to courses taught by the Faculty of Arts).
  • You must take:
    • 15 credit hours minimum at the 2000 level or higher
    • 6 credit hours minimum at the 3000 level or higher
    • 6 credit hours of humanities courses
    • 6 credit hours of social science courses
    • 6 credit hours of coursework that satisfies the science requirement
    • 3 credit hours each in a course that satisfies the written English and math requirements
    • 3 credit hours in each of 5 different subjects
    • at least one area of concentration comprising 18 or more credit hours from one subject field
  • You must have a 2.00 grade point average for concentration courses
  • You must have a 2.00 grade point average on passed courses contributing to the degree.

Some courses may fulfill more than one degree requirement. For example, if you take Math 1010, it will satisfy the math requirement and the science requirement, and it is also a foundation course.

For full details on humanities, social sciences, and written English and math requirements, please visit the Academic Calendar.

Foundation courses

These required courses provide a transition to university-level study and a foundation in the liberal arts. These courses total 21 credit hours. You cannot substitute another course for a foundation course.

  • Introduction to University – ARTS 1110 (3 credit hours)
  • Adult Learning and Development – EDUA 1560 (3 credit hours)
