Ukrainian Students Association (U of M)

Canada-Ukraine student exchange gathering took place during the second weekend of November. Both Ukrainian and Canadian students participated in a variety of educational events, discussions and presentations, accompanied by entertainment and culinary exploration events. 5 Ukrainian students from the Ivano Frankivsk National University participated in the exchange.

Dr. Yuriy Shcherbak - Presentation

A discussion titled "Ukraine: Dreams and Reality" was presented by Dr. Yuriy Shcherbak - an Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiaty of Ukraine. His diplomatic posts have included Israel, the USA, Mexico and Canada. He has been an active environmentalist since the Chornobyl disaster and was the first leader of Ukraine's Green Party. He is also a novelist, as well as a writer on medical, ecological, political and historical issues.

Ukr. Can. Alumni Banquet

A committee of Ukrainian Canadian departments and units as well as graduates at the U of M celebrated its first ever Alumni event by hosting a banquet that honoured 13 prominent Ukrainian Canadian Alumni on September 25, 2010 at St. Andrew’s College. This was in conjunction with the U of M Alumni Assoc., Manitoba Homecoming 2010 and the 140th Anniversary of Manitoba. At the banquet some 110 alumni and guests gathered for the event.

Traditional Lunch and Panel Discussion

The event began with a full traditional Ukrainian lunch followed by a Panel Discussion on the theme of "The Contributions of Ukrainian Canadians to Canada". Panelists included: Orest Martynowych, Orysia Tracz, Iryna Konstantiuk, Dr. Denis Hlynka, Dr. Bob Klymasz, Very Rev. Roman Bozyk

Book Launch with Iryna Mariash

The book launch featured a presentation (in Ukrainian language) by Iryna Matiash, Deputy Director of the State Committee on Archives of Ukraine, who is responsible for compiling the guide. Her book is titled "Archival Ucrainica in Canada: A Guide".

Lecture by Dr. Roman Yereniuk

Lecture topic: Ukrainian Educators in Lviv and Their Understanding of the Diaspora: Results of a Survey. The paper presented the results of a survey questionnaire in the oblast of Lviv of four cohorts of educators about their understanding and comprehension of the Ukrainian diaspora.

Lecture in Ukrainian on "The Spirituality of Ukrainian Icons and Sacred Art". The presentation discussed issues and interesting facts related to restoring icons and other religious forms of art found in Ukraine.

Lecture by Marcia Ostashewski

Lecture topic: Ukrainians in Unexpected Canadian Places. Marcia Ostashewski (Cape Breton University) explored the legacy of Aboriginal and Ukrainian settler encounters on the prairies - in music, dance and related expressive culture. Her work raises questions about perceptions of intercultural relationships and their place within Ukrainian and Aboriginal cultures in modern Canada, and engenders new perspectives about Ukrainians and group identity with regard to constructions of identity, nationhood and community.

"Ukrainian Voice" Centennial

The Ukrainian Canadian newspaper published in Winnipeg, Ukrainian Voice (“Ukrayinskyi Holos”)  celebrated its 100th anniversary on Sunday March 14, 2010 with a banquet and program. The newspaper is the oldest Ukrainian newspaper in Canada and one of the oldest multicultural newspapers in Canada. The guest speaker was the prominent Winnipeg Ukrainian Canadian educator, Valentyna Noseworthy. Read more...
