Course planning usually begins in November for the following school year. Depending on staff available, the need to offer required courses in our various programs, and other factors, the Department submits a proposed schedule to the Dean's Office. The Dean's Office vets the proposals of all departments and submits a grand schedule to the Registrar's Office. This process may take several months, and usually doesn't produce a formal schedule of exaclty what courses are offered, or when, until April.
We try to offer required ("core") courses every year, and elective courses every other year, but sometimes we cannot make this work. If you are particularly interested in a course, it is best to let us know as early as possible, in case we can work it into the schedule. Changes cannot be made once it all becomes official.
If you need special or written permisson to enroll in a course, you must download, print, and fill out a Request for Letter of Permission form, and return it to the department office (534 Fletcher Argue).
Courses with variable topics (3820 Special topics, 3840 Special topics in ASL, etc.) always require written permission. Special permission is required if you are not otherwise allowed to register for a course--the course has been filled to capacity, you must bypass a prerequisite, etc. Generally speaking, special permission is possible only in exceptional circumstances.
Requests that come in over the summer or during regular registration are handled toward the end of August, after main registration, when we can assess course capacities and priorities among applicants. Applications that come in before second (winter) term are handled case-by-case.
You will be notified if permission is granted. You must then come in to pick up a Faculty of Arts "Letter of Permission" form, which you must then present in person at the Arts General Office (3rd floor Fletcher Argue, or whatever your home Faculty is). They will clear the 'block' so that you can register for the class through Aurora Student as usual.
