The Institute welcomes all U of M graduate students, particularly those in Arts engaged or interested in interdisciplinary humanities-themed research, to participate in a representative caucus. We see this is an opportunity for graduate students to organize interdisciplinary events through the UMIH, making useful connections outside of their departments.
The hope was that the activities of the UMIH Graduate Student Caucus (GSC) would be student-driven, in that the students themselves would decide what kinds of activities they would like to see and UMIH would then help facilitate and create an institutional space for the activities. The Caucus has been successful in realizing this plan.
For 2010-2011 the UMIH-GSC focussed its energy on producing an online, peer-reviewed, graduate student journal open to U of M graduate students. The theme for the inaugural issue is Community Intersections. For those whose papers were accepted for the journal, a workshop was held February 24th and 25th, 2011. At this workshop, draft papers were circulated amongst GSC participants and faculty members, then presented as part of editing process for feedback.
The UMIH Graduate Student Caucus met again on March 16th, 2011 to continue planning for their interdisciplinary online, peer-reviewed, graduate student journal.
Work on the journal is currently on hold - it is hoped that it will start up again in the 2012-2013 academic yuear.
