Graduate Student Funding
Several kinds of financial aid are available for full-time MA and PhD students. Students who wish to apply for financial aid should request information when submitting the application for admission to the Department of English, Film, and Theatre. Acceptance to the program is not equivalent to a guarantee of financial assistance.

University Fellowships:

An award provided directly by the Faculty of Graduate Studies in a university-wide competition, consisting of an award, currently, of $16,000 per calendar year for study leading to the PhD degree, and $12,000 per calendar year for the MA degree. Provided that the student has maintained high grades and made satisfactory progress in a full-time graduate program, and budget permitting, University Fellowships may be renewed annually through the second year of study in the MA program and through the fourth year of study in the PhD program. (PhD students must have made appropriate applications to the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship Program.) Students beyond the second year in the Master's program or beyond the fourth year in the PhD program are not eligible to apply for or hold a University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship.  Applications for these Fellowships will be invited in January of each year.

Please contact the department to obtain a 2010/2011 UMGF Application.

Teaching Assistantships:

Full-time students registered in the PhD program may apply for positions as Lecturers or Seminar Leaders in first-year literature courses. Seminar Leaders are required to register in the non-credit graduate seminar ENGL 7590 Teaching Literature at University for the duration of their teaching appointments. Teaching appointments may be renewable—subject to course availability, progress in program, academic standing, teaching evaluation, and contract regulations. Because all graduate teaching assistants are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, terms of appointment, salaries, and dates of appointment are governed by the union contract.

To view current postings and obtain an application form, students can log onto http://www.umanitoba.ca/admin/human_resources/employment.
