Recent Courses:

  • Caribbean Literature
  • Writing and Gender
  • American Literature and Medicine
  • American Literature and Animals
  • Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe

Areas of Specialization:

American Literature; 19th–century medical history; feminist theory; critical animal studies.

Other Interests / Recent Undertakings:

  • I am in the process of completing a book titled Antebellum Abortion: Open Secrets in Poe and Hawthorne, which is forthcoming with the University of New Hampshire Press. My most recent publication--which will become a chapter of this book—is titled "This Rag of Scarlet Cloth: Nathaniel Hawthorne's Abortion" (Studies in the Novel, Spring 2017).
  • I work in critical animal studies as well as in American studies, and I consider myself an animal-rights activist. I have published book chapters on pigs in industrial meat production; on Benjamin Franklin's vegetarianism;  on Wuthering Heights' preoccupation with animals souls; and two interviews, one with eco-philosopher Timothy Morton (co-published with Caitlin McIntyre) and the other with animal-philosopher Cary Wolfe (co-published with Alison Calder).
