Catholic Studies

The story of the Roman Catholic church and its members, and the story of their interactions with history, the arts and sciences, human thinking and belief—all these together, in the dynamism and richness of their interplay—form the substance of the human culture which is Catholicism. That culture is the subject matter of the Catholic Studies Program—an interdisciplinary unit seeking to foster an intellectual and academic approach to Catholicism which does justice to its full human reality and integrity as a culture. Our program hopes to include the findings of the many academic disciplines which offer crucial perspectives on Catholic culture.

Catholic Studies at St. Paul’s College, University of Manitoba, strives to be inclusive.  It welcomes students from widely divergent intellectual and religious backgrounds.  Its goal is not to proselytize or to defend, but to study, explore, and understand.

INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM IN CATHOLIC STUDIES

The Catholic Studies Program is designed both for students wishing to pursue a minor and  for students interested in taking one or several courses that would expand and deepen their understanding of Catholicism. The Program draws on courses offered independently by various academic departments, the subject matter of which, as a whole or in substantial part, deals with aspects of Catholicism.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

To minor in Catholic Studies a student must take 18 credit hours. All students are required to take CATH 1190 : Introduction to Catholic Studies (3 credits), normally at the beginning of the program. During subsequent years students take 12 credit hours from a list of approved courses focused specifically on themes and issues in Catholic Studies. Finally, students take a Capstone Course: RLGN 3870 : The Thought of Bernard Lonergan.
