Hawaiian Kin Terms, Male Ego

All the relatives within a generation receive the same kinterm without regard to collateral vs lineal or matrilineal vs patrilineal distinction, as illustrated in the following diagram.

 In this particular case the terminology includes two additional complications: relative gender and relative age of siblings.

• Relative gender: A sibling is designated according to relative and absolute gender.
• Both males and females give same gendered siblings the same term: kaikua'ana.
• A male calls his sister kaikuahine.
• A female calls her brother kaikuane.
• Relative age: The term for same gendered sibling above kaikua'ana refers only to an elder brother or sister. The term for younger sibling of the same gender is kaikaina.
