"The Study of alt.devilbunnies:
An Anthropological Discussion of Societies on the Internet."

Hello! So curiosity got the better of you did it? Can it be that you are really interested in what I have to do for class. If you are, I hope this stuff makes sense because I will be covering a lot of ground on this topic. I believe that the topic that I will be discussing in my presentation (Mark your calendars people, it's March 23rd) will be of much interest to many people, or at least to those of you who are visiting from alt.devilbunnies, the focus group of my presentation. Once my presentation is finished, I will provide my audio version of the project, and also a copy of the finished work. It might be here or on another page. Why on another page you ask? Because, as of April 24th I will no longer be a member of the University of Manitoba. On that day, I will be moving to the University of Calgary to finish my education.

So here's my Anotated Bibliography, which is worth 20% of my final mark. As well, I am providing you with a copy of my outline and other interesting tidbits that pertain to this project.

Thanks for stopping by!

Ilona Webb

The Anotated Bibliography!

This is a list of all the online sources and paper sources that I used for my project. This list is intended to help others of you locate what you need to do a project like this. Hope they help! *=X:)

The Devilbunnies homepage This is the home page upon which my project is based. Found within these pages are the Ground Rules, the FAQ's, the Archives and other important things that were vital in my research. Also located here is a list of other webpages that hold the history of the group.

The Newsgroup This is where part of the research occurred. This is where people meet to discuss daily issues, and to banter with each other.

History of alt.dbs as recalled by John Katen In this paper, the early history of the group is remembered, from it's humble beginnings, up until the beginnings of the first FAQ.

Constructions and Reconstructions of Self in Virtual Reality: Playin in the MUDs This article written by Sherry Turkle is intrumental in looking at the construction of how people work in not just the MUDs, but can be compaired   to the workings of alt.devilbunnies as well. She talks about presenting a "character" of ones self, and how one can be someone different than what they are in the group. In the focus group, this occurs as well, on a regular basis. An example of this, I draw upon my own characters, Kaeralina DeVille Bunny, and the newly created CharlesMentat. They are not me, but they are my online presence.

IRC on AustNet - an example of a virtual community This article written by "Cyberrdewd" looks at the IRC world and how it can be an aspect of online community. Since this article looks at heirarchy, and acceptance, I chose to use this article as a counter point to the alt.dbs heirarchy and how acceptance is key to becoming a full fledge member of the group.

Identity and deception in the virtual community I chose to use this article sort of as a balance to the Sherry Turkle Article (link above). In her article Judith S. Donath looks at the problems associated with identity in the online communities, and the difficulties of knowing whether the information provided by an individual can be taken as valid or as word of mouth.

Quake-ing in my boots I chose this article because it seemed similar to what goes on in the alt.dbs. Mary-Anne Breeze talks about the togetherness of the people and the changes in communication between characters. She even discusses why people would choose to play such a game, which has been a question I've asked myself often in these last few months.

MWC home page This is just a link point for my own personal webpage. I will use other examples of webpages as well.

Other home pages for the DBs. Instead of putting individual pointers, I have given a general find-it-here page for my references. Since there are many webpages, I provided a place to look through them for information sake.

The Outline!

What's a project without an outline?

The Presentation!

I can't believe I stood up in front of people and talked for 45 minutes on flesh eating rabbits! Oh well, I've seen worse talks and topics for people to do in class! And when you get down to it, doesn't it seem logical? *=X;)

Audio File is in Real Audio Format.

Don't redistribute this please. It's against university rules to steal what others have done. You could fail your course, or get kicked out of school for pulling a stunt like that.

The Essay!

Finally all that hard work is done. (sigh) Who would have thought that writing an essay on the Community of Alt.Devilbunnies would be so much fun! Like I said on my main page, I spend a lot of time with these people so naturally doing a paper like this would be fun. <giggle> Well, it's been a fun ride, but now it's time to focus on more important things, like exams and moving. So here I present to you my paper on the society of the alt.devilbunnies. Hope you enjoy it.

See warning underneath The Presentation. Thank you very much.
